Thanks, Sharkie. My club’s the same. Our senior team is often mostly made up of masters and they often do need someone for TJ. But I’m only jumping off a 5m board at the moment (hoping to move back to the 7m when I’m fit again) and apparently it’s up to the officials on the day to decide whether they’ll add a 5m board, so it’s a bit of a gamble to travel just to do that. But I’ll definitely bear that in mind.

Ah yes CW - I totally get that! Even when you 'know' you are capable of the further out board, the merest element of doubt kind of scuppers your chances. And triple jump is just too risky to, er, risk it!

My 'mission' to run all standard flat distances and to get an official sub 60 400 is still pending as I've switched my entry at the Midlands Masters champs (23 Jun) from 400m to 1500m . The 1500m looks like I might get a decent race competition wise (good chance to forget about time). If the 400m was after I'd probably still do it but with it being before I'd just be killing my legs.

There's possibly an opportunity at an open on 29 June where the 400 is the last event of the day. Still need to decide if and what I do there. 400m might be good prep for the 800m a few days later (3 July) so could do it as a stand alone event if I'm not drawn to anything before it (so far entries are sparse for 29 Jun). I need to plan the next couple of months of the season.

Next race is 5000 a week on Friday (14 June), I've kept endurance work up but track work has mainly focused on 1500 so far so we shall see how that goes.

4:24.10 for 1500 today at the MMAC Champs. Silver M40 (6th overall with 4 M35s ahead) but 0.10 slower than PB!

Couple of things that probably led to no PB, I was kind of hoping for slow start and racing to start at 1000-800 to go. Well it didn't start slow, two leaders were away from the gun and then the group I was with was being pulled at along at a decent lick, I was at the back and could see that 3-5 looked strong but I had doubts about the others so I made a move from 300-400 and got on the back of 3-5. Unfortunately I then chickened out of going with it and the gap opened up. I think I should have tried to go with it but on reflection I wonder whether I should have been moving into position from 200-300. They went through 800 in 2:19 which is something I should be prepared to try (I presume I was 2-3 secs back).

Anyway from 800 to go I worked well. Was chasing on my own with some pressure from the third M40 who had made the same move as me but I held him off by running a strong last 800 with kicks at 400 and 200 and got to within a second of 5th overall who was fading.

Happy with the performance overall (the recent temp change didn't make things feel easier), I probably should have gone in with the mentality of race however was necessary but something to remember in the future (can still have that mentality for certain races but got to be ready for anything if racing a champs race). M40 winner ran 4:18.05 so wouldn't have expected to beat him but could have fought to be closer for longer.

Since the 1500 above, I've raced 5000 a week last Friday where I sat on the lead pack as hanging on was all I felt like I could do but then kicked to the win over the last 450 with a 69 last lap and 33 200 and 15 100 to finish with 16:34.2

Then last Wednesday 800 in 2:12.63 where I was left in the first 100m but slowly clawed my way back but relaxed too much from 400-600. Need to do more sub 1500 pace work.

Next up is Loughborough BMC Regional 1500 a week on Wednesday, then Wimbledon 5000 Festival on 3 August assuming I don't enter anything in-between.
