I read the top 8 do get an Olympic Diploma which is a paper certificate, but that was only expanded to top 8 in 1981. Obviously based on 8 lanes on an athletics track that makes some sense (finalist basically) but I'm making the assumption that's what the change was based on: en.m.wikipedia.org

Not seen anything clearly stat why top 3 was chosen for medals though.

Oh I also did 300, 200, 100 chasing said teammate. Think there's something to having someone faster to chase that hopefully gets you to problem solved and run more efficiently (the 300 was too long for that though, 100 was perfect).

Went to the track today for some proper speed work rather than MD stuff. 4 x 150 + 5 X 100 with slow walk back recovery. Pleasantly surprised by the decent speed in the legs. All in dragonfly spikes.

Splits
23.2 20.5 20.4 20.8
13.6 13.5 13.7 13.3 13.4

Nice confidence builder in regards to where my speed is at.

4:24.76 for 1500 earlier today, 72 @ 400, 2:23 @ 800 and 3:15 at the bell. Was dead last at from gun to 600 (with a decent gap till 500). Went past the second pack at 600 and almost acted as rabbit for that group from that point but was running strong as shown by the splits. Would have liked to have more in the last 100 but that's been greedy at this point of the season. Good run and hopefully more to come.

Ran at the Bannister Mile on bank holiday Monday. It had a call room which we had to be in 15 mins before the race and legs just didn't get going which wasn't helped by the pacing not been as advertised and wavelights not working (the two are probably linked). Ran 4:51.19 with a 1500 official split of 4:31.47. Would have liked 4:45 which is basically the pace I ran today but every race can't go to plan.

Thanks J2R. Nice to be back in that range after injury in 2022 and a late season start in 2023 where it felt like I was playing catch-up. It's a better start to my season than my PB year of 2021 as I ran a few bad 1500 in the first couple of months of that season.

BUAC session today. Split 1500s, 2 x (700, 500, 300), 2/6 rec, 10 mins then 8 x 200, 60s rec.

Fun session. Had a good group of a couple of teammates plus some BUAC women to work with. I led the the long rep and then others led out the shorter rep. Second 700 featured a pacing fail by me. After advice to the group that we were probably too conservative on the first rep, last time, I said I'd aim for 70 and got out well to ensure I was up to speed quickly but ran a 66 sec first 400! Session didn't disintegrate after that which is good (although the 'accidental' extra 30 secs recovery helped) and still finished strong.

200s just a bit of extra volume at speed with no stress.

Splits

2:08.0 85.4 50.3 (4:23.7)
1:59.7 87.6 48.6 (4:15.9)
35.8 35.8 35.1 35.4 33.9 34.3 34.0 31.0

Another split 1500 session today. 2 x (3 x 500) 2/6 mins recovery. Missed the first two reps on watch but pacing was on point with two 85s via teammate I was working with (I lead the rep out). Another teammate jumped in on the last two reps and paced to 300 which was a great help and made the first 200 feel slower. Last rep was 85.0 but 84.98 to two DP, lol.

Splits

85.5 85.4 86.2 (4:17.1)
85.4 86.2 85.0 (4:16.6)

Probably wouldn't quite go at that pace for a 1500 but a 68 first lap then back off a bit should be possible.

I've long been a fan of the Peters Race Pacer datascreen for marathons and longer races, but only recently discovered that there is a "hi vis" version of it which feels like it would work effectively on a track if you wanted to lap every 400m or 800m or so.

apps.garmin.com

Will be giving it a workout on a club 3000m track night race on Friday. I'm a habitual manual lapper anyway on a track, so doesn't involve me doing anything other than setting up my "target".
