Garmin (with the right watch) can do lapping every 400m already with track mode

Yep, but I don't have the right watch!
Plus the forecasting (ahead / behind etc) is something useful.

Having a look and it seems it does more than lapping.

I think you know my views on buzzing etc but some will find it useful.

Yep, I'd drop the buzzing with this; just gives a nice clear display of even pacing. Wouldn't recommend for less than a mile I don't think, but 3k+ would work fine, and when you're taking 85-ish seconds per lap it's not too rushed, and useful to help keep on track and making adjustments on the fly.

Visually seeing where you are at all times could work like pacelights so that could be useful especially if working by yourself.
How does it deal with distance variance with Garmin's that don't have track mode or does it somehow incorporate track mode for watches that don't have it?

It effectively relies on the GPS but then at the point at which you hit a fixed point and choose to hit "lap" it resets the calculations to that more precise measurement point. So if you set the lap as 400m and the GPS has measured you as having travelled 408m by the time you cross the 400m line (and therefore pace and projected finish time are based on the time / distance with 408m as the distance), it resets the distance to 400m and improves the quality of the projection etc.

Ok, your habitual manual lapper comment makes sense now.

Some LD work for me today, 3 x 3000, 4 mins rec. Target 10:30 (35 min 10k pace)
Splits 10:30 10:24 10:18
First time doing reps this long but it's a nice session as speed is not an issue (as long as you don't start too fast of course) when you've been running 1500 pace regularly, just got to settle into the rhythm and keep it ticking over. Felt strong as the reps show.
