What weight of yarn do you plan to use for the headband, Pix? If you have a 40cm circular needle in the appropriate size, using the stitch count for a hat would work for a headband, you just wouldn't need to work the crown.

I guess DK would give more padding

Thinking about it now you mention it I have a good hat that I did that fits well now I wonder what pattern it was?

I suspect that if you put "easy" "DK" and "sweater" into a Ravelry search you'll get an avalanche of them, Pix. I probably have old paper patterns for basic jumpers knitted in pieces too. (I don't use them, I make stuff up as I go along because knitting's just loops, sticks and maths.)
