A friend of mine did her 50th parkrun and 50th volunteer a few weeks ago. I gave her this as a present.

I've just had my reminder email for tomorrow.

Is this... "If you are a Barcode Scanner or a Timekeeper we would prefer that you download the free "Virtual Volunteer" app from either the Apple Store or from Google Play. Please also ensure that your phone is fully charged"

...the standard message now for these roles? I think this message might put some people off.

Bob!
No, it's not the standard message for all parkruns.

The reminder email has a template you can use but I always change and add any extra bits on to it I need to. I suspect that parkrun wants to get people to use the app more, hence the message. It has some advantages (like ease of getting the data off), but also some complications (like some phones don't work for scanning as the camera isn't good enough (ie my daughters!)

Ditto with Milano Nord that I did - very low key, low kit, few volunteers. App only. Looks like app-only is the way parkrun want all new territories to start up. UK is "behind"? :-)G

My brother is event director for the Tokyo parkrun. They weren't given any scanners. But it seems in mid summer is been so humid that some phones don't work properly.

I understand that all new parkruns are to be app users only, with no watches or scanners in the kit. I mentioned this to someone who is timekeeping at a pre-inaugural trial event tomorrow. Her response was, I have no intention of adding any apps to my phone or using it for parkrun. I suspect she is not alone and this may stop some people volunteering for timekeeping and scanning roles.
