To be honest Mrs S it's more the grass than the hill that gets me at Stoney ( I am trying to do more hill work in training )

No response from parkrun to my tweet. I can't say I'm surprised.

Freshstart - Tom Williams gives the parkrun view on milestone shirts in one of his Fetchie interviews soundcloud.com ( about 16.30 ). Speaking as someone on a 412/143 ratio ( not counting the historical omissions or number of times I have scanned after finishing a run ) I really don't think that having 50.100 or any number of additional shirts will increase the number or encourage new volunteers. Your initial worry was concerning a new event starting close to Sutton and there being sufficient volunteers to support that. As new events have to have a core team and sufficient volunteers in the pool before starting I don't see that being a major issue, you only have to look at South East London where events spawn new events almost monthly - the new event may take participants away from the 'mother church' but the gap is quickly filled and mother event continues to thrive, meanwhile the new event develops it's own group of regulars and volunteers over time.

One of the main issues is managing the volunteers and assessing the true requirements for each event, some start adding a marshal at this turn, number checkers and multiple funnel managers and before you know it the basic team of 8 or 10 has jumped to 30 and it becomes very difficult to pair back. There are also local interpretations of what each role actually is meant to involve - that can be slightly different to what was initially intended - and before you know it you have created a new role for example, people going round asking participants what time they finished and token number is not an essential role but more likely one where one day the ED/RD thought it would help to process results and once created it sticks.

You also have to accept that some people just don't like or not willing to volunteer in life, they may spend a lot of time volunteering elsewhere, have work, life stress issues and Saturday morning is their release. Others may not be able to commit because they cannot guarantee what they may be doing on Saturday until late in the week ( often post Friday in the pub ) unfortunately events feel the need adhere to having a full roster by Friday and then find several injured or hungover parkrunners turn up and ask if they need volunteers. My 'home' event know that they have several people like myself who will fill a spot if needed on Saturday morning but then, they require very few volunteers and we are all communicating on the group WhatsApp during the week ( usually about cheese ) so the majority of those who volunteer know exactly what is happening with the roster - they don't rely on the volunteer e-mail or event parkrun page for call-outs. Volunteering is a happy, fun, educational and rewarding experience and I feel that message needs to get over more than, you will get a t-shirt.
