...and I don't think any speedwork is necessary for marathon training. As Fenners says, it's icing on the cake.

What sort of pace do you do your steady runs and long runs at?

Longs runs at marathon pace + 50-60 secs.

Steady runs marathon pace + 20-30 secs.

My tempo runs at a pace between 10k and HM pace. LSR pace is marathon pace plus 60 to 90 secs.

Main point to remember is plenty of people run their target time using all sorts of different plans - so a lot of trial and error and finding out what suits you best!

I'd like a sub 3.30 this year, might do it at Shakespeare on 29th April if training goes right.

Hi All. Lots of comments saying intervals/speedwork not necessary for 3h30 time so at what point do they become important sub 3h15 or sub 3h? And a second question - I thought intervals were good for building aerobic capacity? are tempo runs better then? Thanks for the feedback. pn

OllyW went sub-3 and didn't do speedwork. Perhaps its for the sub-2:45 crew?

I'll still be doing the speedwork, probably once a week instead of the current twice a week.

I am very sure there are plenty of ways of skinning the marathon cat :)

I haven't personally needed regular speedwork to get to 2:59, but this doesn't prove a great deal (who knows, if I had replaced a recovery run with a speedwork session I might have gone faster, or got injured). One thing I am sure is beneficial from my own experience is plenty of long runs and as many 20m+ as possible for best results.
