Hi All,
I am after a bit of advice on the best training plan. I am going for 3.30 at Greater Manchester on 29th April (and would love 3.20 which I think is possible if my training goes well). 2 weeks into the training I am still deliberating between Hal Higdon Intermediate 2 and Advanced 1. The main difference is the Thursday run which in the intermediate plan is a general run between 3 and 5 miles and in the advanced programme is a range of intervals, hills and tempo runs. I have a 1.36 half-mara time reasonably recently (Sept. '11) which is 7.18 minute miles so - would it be fair to say I have the pace and should concentrate on endurance? Will stepping up to the advanced plan with speedwork make a big difference? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi PN
Seems like you're in a very similar position to me. I'm also training for Manchester and aiming for sub 3.30. Well actually I'm really aiming for sub 3.15 and loitering on that thread. I'm following HH Intermediate 2 but plan to do one session a week of speedwork BUT only do that session if I don't feel too tired/sore. Priority for me is to never come miss the LSR and ensure I bank plenty of 35+ mile weeks.

We're all gonna do it!
I think if you're confident you have the pace then the endurance is what to concentrate on. That's my plan this year - consistency an endurance
But mines a Smout plan special - kind of planned and shuffled / made up a bit as I go along depending how things go and includes a fair bit of buggy running (otherwise it would mean nae running) and a bit of hill sprints (cos I like them - in a sick kind of way - an cos I feel sit helps my form) OR YASSO-esque type half miles and progressives runs cos they are quite satisfying and the biggest bit for me - attempting to get 2 double figure runs a week Oh aye - an I'm hoping from next week to fit some (sub 3:15 an see how it goes) marathon paced miles into some longer runs.
*toddles back off to reassemble the plan*

Thanks for the comments. I realised I posted the above becasue I don't really want to do the speedwork and I was looking for someone to say "it is fine don't do it", and I could feel less guilty. So, I am going to stick with the speedwork sessions for now but they will be the first session to get dropped if am too tired/sore later on whne the milage increases.
So this lunchtime I attempted a hill session. Hal Higdon recommends starting with 4 reps on a hill 1/4 miles. I found a hill near work which is just over half that so I did 8 reps. Is this equivalent? The splits were 1:02 1:03 1:03 1:04 1:02 1:05 1:06 1:02, so reasonably consistent pace and able to do the last one a the same pace as the first.
I need to find a good spot for 800m intervals next week. I'll try and find a park I can run around that isn't too far away. Thanks again.
