Brian - that's really impressive. I'm aiming for about 3.15 - 3.25 in the spring. I havent quite decided if it's London or edinburgh for me - i have a place in both. Like the idea of edinburgh for the extra month of training Also like the sound of HH int 2. I hate intervals - much too complicated.

Clare, you're on, and keep running as you are and 3.30 is a good goal for you in October.

That Brian that's great I'm trying to improve now on the focus of 1 speed 1 tempo 1 medium 1 long 1/2 general/easy the speed not being eyeballs out but infact around 5k pace for 600m or above and mile pace plus 20secs for shorter.
I've seen too many dickheads at my old club mess there marathon up because they won't listen to sense. They think they must get a pb in speedwork every week. I'm not following a book plan but a repetible coach that you all know

Speedwork is the icing on the cake for the complete speedsters. Not convinced it is necessary for sub-3:30 BUT time will tell.
Also I think a tempo run is better preparation.
So in summary, volume-long run-tempo-speedwork in priority order

How fast ideally would a tempo run be for a 3.30 marathoner?

Complete guess I'm sure some calculators will give a precise figure but I'd go for around 7:20 + or - ten seconds?

My tempo run is HM pace and maxes out at 7 miles. I see no reason why this rule shouldn't apply across all marathon time targets
