Yes, but, well, maybe not so good guide.
I probably will be going all solo the whole way again, underfoot will be tricky, no spectators cheering me on, weather will be a challenge.
And its hilly.
I can't get that in the calculator :)

It will be a good hard MP 20 miler, that's it. :)

Same for me, auburnette, my best 5k time came after a summer of racing 5ks and 5 miles. 21:20 on a measured course, 20:33 on a net downhill course. When I'm in marathon training, I just can't get the HR up in the range where it normally would be for a 5k. I'm barely above my LTHR.

Maybe I'll have a couple of months this summer where I'm focusing on racing 5k and 10k.

I often find my best times come after marathon training once the legs have recovered a bit.

I find 5K painful from start to finish, a โ€œfront of mindโ€ acute effort that I donโ€™t enjoy, so I avoid them๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I would say marathon is my favourite distance but I have been enjoying doing the national trust 10k this year. I love the challenge of getting all your ducks in a line that the marathon brings - training, tapering, pacing and hydration&nutrition etc

According to the VDOT calculator my 39:06 10k converts to a 3:00:35.

Exactly one hour slower than Kiptum. Wouldn't that be nice ?

I find calculators very reliable from 3k to half marathon.

But the marathon conversion tends to be to optimistic (for me).

Like riggys99 my 5k PR's have been set after a marathon training block. Mileage is key even for a 5k. And mentally it is a nice change to dig really deep for a short time compared to the long lasting sufferfest that a marathon can be.

I prefer the long lasting sufferfest :)

I just find 5ks short and painful and don't particularly enjoy them. I recognize that bringing down my 5k time would translate over longer distances so I may have to bite the bullet more regularly. The virtual challenges we have on this website, 1 mi and 5k, have made me run those uncomfortable distances more frequently. I hope it shows at some point after the marathon.

I like the fact that 26.2 is always just too far. But that if Iโ€™ve been diligent and patient with putting together a decent training block, I can get to c23 miles before I have to really dig into my soul to see it through.
I then have the preceding hours and miles of racing and the months of training to give me the guts to pay back all of that earlier effort and finish my race the best that I can.

It still boils down me to being at my limits for about 5K, but I give whatever it takes willingly to the marathon.

Whereas a pure, โ€œnakedโ€ 5K just makes me shudder.

I think HM is my favorite distance overall. It's long enough that you have to put in a decent amount of training to do it justice but not so long that that training completely takes over your life, like I'm remembering with the marathon currently. Having said that, i am loving the fact that I'm currently the fittest and fastest I've ever been, thanks to said marathon training.

The 5k thing is that mental milestone of cracking a sub 20 for me. Always wanted to, never achieved it so far. Genuinely thought I never would once I went past 50. Running with your insides burning from start to finish for 20 minutes is far from fun. I suspect that once I've hit it, I'll never do it again. Target ticked off. Walk away.

10k is similar I think. A tricky distance to get right. That lovely combination of burning insides but with the added bonus having to hang on for twice as long. Again, I'll have one more crack at my PB for that, then I'll be done with it and stick to halves, marathons and maybe start a bit of trail stuff once I know there's no more PB's on offer. I'm just too childish to stop going for those just yet ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ
