Afternoon

Doing what all injured runners do and planning my next marathon.

At the moment April marathon may be too soon so looking at The Yorkshire Marathon in York on 19 October 2025.
Anybody done it/have any knowledge about it?

Yes my first marathon, also the one I've ran the most, my first sub-3 as well.

Good road surfaces, exposed out and back section from about 14-19 miles can be a bit breezy, lumpy in patches but mainly flat. Really nicely timed (not) steep little hill in the last mile before a lovely downhill to the finish.

I'd recommend it, likely to be lots of people and groups to run with at our paces.

I always fancied York marathon, but was put off by the hill at the end. But Brunski, you make it sound OK! Have you done Chester? Is it bigger or smaller than the mile 23 heartbreak hill in Chester marathon? :-) G

I’ve done it too, only once and ages ago but I took a look and the course hasn’t changed.

It’s quite big now, well organised, starting and finishing at (the most prestigious, ahem) university. You run down @HappyG(rrr)’s hill in to the city and then out in to the countryside for the majority of the route where it’s undulating if not hilly. The out and back bits that Brunski describes are defo a bit wearing but do allow for some decent support. I ran a PB there so can’t complain.

I was really concerned by the final hill tbh. I went back to my blog from the time and read that I promised myself that I could walk up there once I got to it!! When I got there it really wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. I believe it was harder to go up on your bmx after a few pints in town and that had twisted my memory 😂😂😂

I don’t blog often. Even in 2013 they were long and self indulgent! Just in case there’s anything to help in here though.

I've not done Chester, and I live in Sheffield so am used to hills. I'd also been warned about the hill at the end (you actually run down it at the start, which I should've taken more notice of).

First marathon there I was run/walking from 18 miles and the hill was walked, 2nd time I'd slipped off 3hr pace and although I got up the hill OK it was tough, 3rd time I was clinging on for my first sub 3 and had to gun it up the hill and into the finish.

It's only a couple of minutes up a moderately steep(ish) hill, my advice is maybe it could add 30 of so secs to your time in that split, so be aware of it but it's pretty short so don't sweat it too much!

The end in York isn’t a big problem unless perhaps you’re already in trouble. The course certainly isn’t the fastest I’ve done, but it’s not too bad and I did enjoy it.
