My locality means I've broadly got 2 choices. Run downhill about 50m drop in elevation, then undulating and run back up that 50m on a 10% incline so my heart can be really working hard at the end of a run, or run uphill for about 70m gain in elevation over about a 3/4 mile stretch including a 100m section at about 16%, and then descend / undulate over the rest. I often wonder whether those early or late high HR periods impacted my early running experience, compared to those who only ever really run on "flat" roads.

I tend to alternate which way I do my usual loops, sometimes just for variety and other times because they offer very different challenges - a steep, tough, lung busting climb becomes a terrifyingly slippery and technical descent for example, and so the training benefits are worlds apart but both beneficial.

I always let my heart rate drift a bit because of the hills. Around here I can very easily be at 155bpm and doing 13-14mm uphill, and then be 6mm down the other side and not even get my heart rate to 140bpm (unless I'm terrified or fall over, that gets it up!).

I'm tempted to look back at my log and do some comparisons, but there are so many other factors that affect HR that I think the noise would drown out the meaningful data.

The physics of different directions intrigues me a little. In pure "move this mass from here, to here, including getting it up to this elevation here" there should be no difference between steep up, gradual down vs gradual up, steep down, but clearly the "friction" or other inefficiencies in running gets in the way of that, including fatigue levels. Plus our own personal choices of whether we prefer to bust a gut up a hill or just ascend slowly whilst managing heart rate.

OG YouTuber Casey Neistat, even though his is not a running channel, does his thing for NYC Marathon.

Sponsored by Brooks, but used an old pair of Brooks ‘sneakers’ for the event.

I’ve read elsewhere that you might be suffering some Achilles issues @riggys99. How is it looking for you?

Thanks for asking @Windsor Wool it’s a lot better than even Monday so I will be on the start line at the Maravan on the 24/11. It’s a lapped course so no real issues if I need to drop out. We would be at the van that weekend so no accommodation to worry about. Hoping for sub 3:15 for the marathon part (course is about 0.5 miles longer)

That’s good to read. Excellent news.

I’m sure that I knew that the course is a slightly funky length. What do you do for a mara time? Rely on a watch reading or is there some kind of interim timing provided?

Just have to rely on watch reading or last time I used my fetch benchmark.
This year I have set a workout on my watch to give me 26.2 time.

Good to hear riggys!

I’m going slightly backwards I must say, but at least I’m back in this treads time bracket 😂

I can understand why you wanted to go and run a race under the radar @Bowman 🇸🇪. Well done, another very good time there. Hope you are feeling proud.

I don’t know how you’ve managed to pick such appalling weather conditions once again. That is seriously bad luck and incomprehensible when most of us are in the UK and have had flat calm running conditions for what feels like months.

I hope that you can get to the bottom of whatever underlying health issue is bothering you. I think there were some very wise comments in your training entry. Look after yourself 👍🏻
