Joe, that one is a potential if I don’t go to Goodwood. I’ve done a few of theirs and they’re friendly events, and I know the RDs fairly well.

jda, I’ve a plan to make Manchester my 99th, but I need one more between now and then, as I’m currently on 97. I know we’re all different, but the year I did my most amount of marathons (31) still includes my 2 best times so I’m not too concerned about the timing of it in relation to Manchester. I don’t ‘race’ the majority of my marathons though!

I think I hit around 30 in six months and about 20 were sub 3:15 including 3 and a half sub 3's.
Once you are used to the distance you can run marathons much more regularly that is generally accepted.

You won't peak and you may be running tired but not many of us train well enough to judge how to taper or periodise our training to effectively peak anyways.

Joe, well done - that is great to read. For me, 3:20-3:30 is a reasonable effort, but if I am doing doubles or several in a row over a few weeks, I tend to aim for around 3:30-3:45-ish. For Manchester I have purposefully eased off the numbers to try and get some more traditional type of training in, but I just need one more marathon before then to make my plans work. I have to say, I am enjoying entering shorter races too, which is what I used to do before getting the marathon bug - I currently have 3 Halfs, a 10K, a 5-miler, and a 5K in the pipeline before Manchester, and there may well be more, but I will see how it goes. With a PB of 3:19 I don't really belong on this thread I suppose, but I know on the right day I am capable of quicker than that. Since the pandemic, the last two years have been quite good for me, in terms of training and also weight loss, but I got Covid in October before my A-race so wasn't able to toe the start line (I had done 89mins for a Half and 39:50 for a 10K in the build up, so I believe I was in decent shape, and I think I am possibly a bit quicker than that now).

As long as you do it at least a month out and treat it more as an extended long run (even if you do parts at MP ) I very much doubt it will have any negative impact on your target race.

Absolutely WW. All welcome especially those intending to improve. The starters of the thread had 3:28, 3:27 and 3:21 marathons all of 15 years ago.

Thanks all.

Joe, Belfast in May is booked in for my 100th. I really enjoy doing European marathons and have been fortunate to have done quite a few, but with the Covid restrictions I wasn’t confident planning one abroad. I’m hoping NI will be fine, and we’re going over in the campervan with the dog to make a trip out of it. Haven’t done Belfast before, but it works out for me. My other main race is Dartmoor Discovery (32 miles, hilly) in June, which is organised by my running club, and then hopefully the next main one is Nice-Cannes in October.

Oscar, yeah, thanks, I have seen those. I was looking at Goodwood for potentially a faster ‘official’ time though. Also, ideally, I wanted to keep March free before Manchester. I think it’ll be either Goodwood or the RED event. I am on the waiting list for Seville but I’ve no idea how likely it is I’ll get a place, plus if flights go up too much in price, I wouldn’t do it anyway.
