Can you add me to the side bar please, i'm doing Manchester?

Ran a 20 miler last Sunday with club was supposed to be 8min/mile but ended up 7:45's and that was me falling off the back. Day before was 15k at marathon pace.......I know too much. Retreat this week, 10 Mile race on Sunday then back to long miles weekend after. Enjoying the training, but in bed by 9:30 most nights...

Mr. Grumpy
That’s great running MAG. I’m beginning to think that I’ve over-reached in my ambition for a sub 3:15 at Manchester, cos I don’t think I’d be able to get anywhere near your paces back to back right now.

Nice pace but be careful MAG. Too many of those and you could end up getting ill or injured. We're all different but 7:45 - 8:00 is more like the LR pace for a 3:00hr marathon.

X post there Mr G. If you're training with LRs at about 8:30s (I'm not sure what your pace is) I would say you are in the right ball park for a 3:15 marathon.

Tell me to clear off out the thread if you like but doing long runs as a long steady run (rather than a long slow run) can work as well, depends how you chunk up your training I guess.

You want to get yourself to a place where running 10 miles at your marathon pace feels pretty comfortable IMHO.

I do my long runs about 8 min miling, a shade quicker on the pancake flat sections but my route has some slopes. I’m aiming around 2:50 on the day.

As I said Brunski, we're all different and cope/react to training in different ways. I don't think you are wrong, it's good marathon training, but running 20 miles with 10 at MP would be a hard session that should be preceded the day before and followed the day after by easier running or rest. I would also do the other 10 miles at slower than MP+1:00 pace.

Whilst I would no longer do it myself, I'll stand behind the "each to their own" approach!

Just looking at the 20m run on the training log though, HR (therefore effort) did seem to get pretty hard by the end.

I agree there’s nothing wrong with the odd harder long effort. I’m supposed to be doing up to 25k at MP and will also do one or two half marathons as races. But that’s not something I would advise week in week out.

Just agreeing with the others but also noting it’s a good run and so key is to build on that
