HappyG, just to confirm I don't think it is finishing comfortably, it is just avoiding the crash-and-burn. Unless you are pacing a time say 15-20 minutes less than you could race, the end of a marathon will never be comfortable (in my experience). But I relish and enjoy the hard work, just hate the crash-and-burn feeling, nothing in the tank, unable to get the heart rate up.

And lark, yes, it was a mixed weekend for the predictor tool. Having been pretty close on Clare in Berlin it fared like this at Chester:
Baz: 3:08 / 3:02 G: 3:31 / 3:11 Lark: 3:16 / 3:14
Of course I am claiming some coaching kudos for preventing you from going off at 3:0x pace
However bingo at York:
Brunski: 2:59 / 2:59

And I'm an outlider and Baz is a machine. Larks is within tolerance, surely? Well done Brunski!
Fenners, you can avoid the blow up by staying the right side of your ability in your pace target - if you're trained to 7:20 pace, don't set off at 6:45s. If you're trained to 8:00, don't set off at 7:30s. Because I agree with you - that way lies a crash and burn. But if you're trained to 7:00 pace, no need to set off at 7:20s and waste 5 mins in your first half just to have a glorious second half. Unless the person doesn't care about times, of course! G

HappyG, apologies for being pedantic HOW DO YOU know that you are trained for 7:20 or 8:00 or x:yz?

Larks - I think you did this at the time we discussed it but have you tried the predictor tool with your Aug / Sep mileage as the last 8 weeks?

Anyone who has trained seriously has surely been working out their max sustainable MP to around 10s/mile if not rather more precisely that that. First marathons perhaps an exception.

Getting a wee mention re forthcoming 3.15 attempts, I feel a bit of a fraud. Whilst I was probably one of the 1st posters on this thread I haven't contributed since starting up again although I've found following the posts (as always) very inspirational and thought provoking! I'm still not sure if I'm in 3.15 shape or, more importantly, whether I want to try and find out if I am. I've worked out that a 3.25 would give me a sub 3.10 average for 11 Snowdonia marathons I've done - or sub 3.05 (excluding my 1st one & the one I paced someone). Still just under 3 weeks to go and having recently picked things up again I'm going for a Martin Yellingesque negative taper!!

Haha, glad to have helped give you a bingo on the predictor WW 😀 However how you knew I was going to go out a tad too quick, start to struggle and then cling on for dear life to the sub3 dream over the last 5 miles I'm not quite sure 😜 Very interesting debate on the thread about pacing. I think even splits are obviously the ideal and easier to achieve if you are running slightly within yourself, however to run your absolute best race you either need lots of marathon experience, or you go a bit aggressive and get lucky as it all falls into place!
