Long time to go yet FR, don't write things off too soon.
What's with the injury? I must have missed that.

Hip injury which came on out of the blue without any niggles. It just appeared one evening after 2 days of very light training, which I can't imagine were the cause. It's really compounding my back and neck problems at the moment as well.
I'm still hoping to run in the Wokingham half marathon on Sunday, but if I do, that will be my first run for 4 weeks and with only 2 weeks of running training since Abingdon.

Initial symptoms were achiness all around the left hip, followed within 24 hours by loss of all movement at the hip. Attempting to move the leg wasn't painful, but there was just nothing there. That was diagnosed as a trapped nerve and AI's and pain killers enabled me to be able to move the joint again within 24 hours.
That was 3 weeks ago, but I am still limping, still have a lot of aches in the hip area and get pain from the joint itself when most of my weight is on it. I have had back and neck problems for years, and arthritis has been suggested at times. A recent blood test showed up something which means lupus is a possibility, although I hope not and other things have to be ruled out first.

Sounds nasty FR. Do you think it's connected to your back and neck problems in the sense that you are running unevenly to compensate. I suppose you've tried the usual osteopath, physio, massage options ?
I've had probs with my left hip for a year - almost definitely linked to a back problem. I've tried everything and spent a fortune on treatments, but the most useful thing I did was to go to a physio who looked at my posture and alignment when standing and when running. I now have exercises to do in order to correct things and the symtoms are there but under control. Acupuncture helped with the pain too.

I've had acupuncture for my neck and back before, but that didn't help.
My hip problem could well be connected to my back and neck problems. I am a qualified gym instructor and personal trainer and have also done sports therapy, so I know quite a bit about exercises I should be doing and the importance of core strength, etc, but despite all this, I can never seem to alleviate the back pain nowadays, and arthritis or something similar, could well be the explanation of my problems. My neck and back muscles are extremely tight, despite exercise and stretching, and so are my leg muscles. I wouldn't be too surprised by this if I exercised without stretching, but that's not the case.
As for physio, chiro, or anything like that, I really can't afford it and am trying to go through the NHS. Ironically, I could massage myself for free - if only I could reach my back!
Got to go off to work now. Lots of fitness test, walkthroughs, etc, this afternoon. Back online tomorrow.

Yeah - I could do a lot of my own treatments if the problems were in the right place! I use a squash ball for trigger pointing - that's quite effective.

it's gone very quiet on this thread - is anyone still hoping for a sub 3.15 or am I all on my lonesome?

Hi B, I'm still on, I think, for a sub 3h15m, but marathon not till the end of October (Snowdonia) - though I've just heard that there is some question over whether it will be going ahead - if not, then I'll probably do the Anglesey marathon and may even target a sub 3h marathon (flatter course) - training in 2007 has been going well - did a comfortable 11miler today at ave sub 6.3min mile pace and at ave h/r of 147 (69% max WHR) Hope your training has been going well and that you are on course for your target.
