Oh, and thank you for the pointer on the audio version. I've saved that to my favourites and I'll have a listen at some stage.

@Nellers I have it on CD, it may still be available I remember it so clearly, perhaps because we listened as a family every sunday lunchtime, my parents are LOTR fans. The voice of Paddington was Gandalf (Michael Hordern). Ian Holm played Frodo then played Bilbo in the films! I was just looking it up, and Bill Nighy was Sam. They repeated it a few years later in 60 min episodes (instead of 26 x 30 min). I also remember the animated version but they never made the second half IIRC I was bought the books as a teenager, by my dad, one per year at Christmas, but it perpetually bugs me that they changed the cover of the books by the time I got book three so they don't match. |

I still have the paperbacks of LOTR, Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales that I was given for successive birthday-Xmas-birthday or the other way round when I was about 12 I guess, after reading a hardback version of the Hobbit the previous year.

I have those and the rest of the History of Middle-Earth books plus the Letters of JRRT. The latter is a very illuminating insight into his later thoughts about his works.

Nellers, you HAVE to listen to the BBC dramatization! You've got Bill Nighy as Sam and Ian Holm as Frodo (which makes his playing Bilbo in the films all the nicer). It's really good.

I always thought McKellan's performance as Gandalf borrowed quite a bit from Michael Hordern although he claimed he based it on JRRT's own voice. Sean Astin, brilliant though he is as Sam also takes a lot from Bill Nighy. I think some parts of the radio version don't stand up so well now: Merry and Pippin especially sound like two public school boys, indistinguishable from each other. |

That's all true McG - everyone sounds rather posh compared with today! I also forgot that Gollum is played by the pathologist from Morse.

I'd like to think Eowyn was played by Peggy Wooley and Saruman was Eddie Grundy.
