I dont mind my job at all (been with the same company 30 years in September) however always think that I could fill my days with fun stuff e.g. running, swimming, golf, walking, travel and therefore would like to retire!! I am 49 so a good few years left yet!!

I'm largely with you, DL, on that. Except 15 years older!
I do feel I'm marking time to a large extent though, recently. I'm ready to go, now. Let me out, please?

I'm kind of with Daz, been at the same place for 18 years now and it's OK, i know there are worse places to work, but i'm not loving it and inspired.
Always think i could fill my days with more fun stuff, same list as Daz too.
Also only 49, for a couple more months anyway, despite checking my pension regularly, i reckon i need another 10 years working, having relatively young children (12 and 9).

I was so desperate to get out of my horrendous workplace that I intermittently played the Lottery . Thankfully, I didn't play at all seriously.
I kept applying for other laboratory jobs and often had interviews but I always seemed to come 2nd or nowhere, no inbetween . Presumably on paper I was very good, but at interview I was "excellent, but not quite what we are looking for." In other interviews, they literally didn't like the look of me and decided at first glance that they weren't going to consider me, even before I started speaking.
At the time, I hadn't yet been diagnosed and if I had been, I am sure I would have got even fewer interviews.
However, there was one job (at an NHS genetic diagnostic laboratory) where they really wanted me but they could only offer me a salary at the bottom of the trainee scale, about a third of what I was then earning.
I gave up applying for jobs and stuck it out at my current job for several years before finally retiring my way out of the horror. It turns out that financially I could have gone a couple of years earlier, but I was too dedicated to patient welfare.

I loved my job and got a lot of satisfaction from watching our students flourish but it could be very stressful - very long hours, 24/7 on call, difficult safeguarding and disciplinary issues, and hard HR processes. I hadn’t realised how burnt out I was until I stopped. I’m still not properly retired, just working in a voluntary capacity in the voluntary sector. Much more freedom though and looking forward to building more in. I’ll never go back to being tied to fixed hours.

My jobs have been tolerable but never really enjoyable. They were a mean’s to putting food on the table, a roof over the head, bringing up a family and the occasional holiday.
As I was turning 50 that’s when retirement seemed close enough to touch. Quite simply I can’t wait, but it’s not quite the time yet
I spent all day today off site with a supplier. It was productive but need to go back tomorrow. I have fallen behind in my workload as a result and when I return I will have loads of follow up to action

Last day of a lovely 13 days in Mallorca.
But very different to the feeling when working; that creeping dread that blights the last 2/3 days, the fear of that email inbox, the crises waiting and the extra graft just to catch back up.
Loads to look forward to back home, can unpack etc in a relaxed manner and away again early May so won’t even need to fully unpack 😃
Love retirement!

Yes, I hated Sunday nights in particular, particularly if I was meeting a new client on Monday.
