So just had an unexpected call with my boss and someone from HR. Since start of the year I reduced my working days per week from 5 down to 4 - I was told this was a trial period but given the impression it would be okay to continue after the trial period of 3 months.
The call I just took says the business states with immediate effect i.e. today onwards I am to go back to working 5 days a week instead of 4.
Their reasoning was that they are finding it very difficult to recruit (I work in IT Consulting) and they are implying lots of work is on the horizon so the trial period of my reduced hours is now finished. They said there is an appeals process if I want to appeal the decision.
This has left me a bit shocked as during the past 3 months I have liked not working Fridays and I have got used to the reduction in salary. I also have long weekend plans in May and main summer holiday in July built around it.
Before today I had planned to hand in my notice at the end of December to then work out the 3 months until March to really retire. It looks likely I will have to accept the 5 day week again but the increase to my salary does give me options to pay off mortgage and other outstanding debts to then hand in my notice a bit earlier, say September or October.

That’s a shame Dobbers, it will be very hard to go back to working 5 days a week after doing only 4 for a while. I’ve recently had to adjust to working from home one day a week instead of two and found it not at all nice.
TRO, I wish you hadn’t talked about having a taste of something immediately after saying you’d rather eat your own testicles than unretire.

Dobbers - I'd have given them the option of accepting your notice on the spot - they may prefer to have you 4 days than none!
I unretired once, but I was only 45 - can't imagine doing it again now

With reverting back to 5 days a week I get my annual leave bumped back up to previous amount. So when I return from summer hols in July I could take every Friday off until the end of the year

Good plan Plus use the extra days pay to clear the things mentioned so you won’t notice the increase
But I do like rosehip’s suggestion
