Next time I'll put them well off the ground. I've only lost a few.

Mine have been outside for a week now and only one has been munched. They need something to hold them up though, I need to find some sticks.

Plant em in deeper soil or bigger pots - shouldn't need staking until they are over 3 feet tall. Staking them will only encourage poor root growth and a thin stem making it susceptible to disease and slugs.

With proper roots and a thicker woodier stem it stands a better chance of making it to the final day :-)

Thanks bigleggy. Mine definitely need to go into deeper bigger pots!

I thought my second batch of sunflowers was a dud because for a few days only two had sprouted, but then I suddenly had eighteen. I'm hardening off both batches now. The first batch is looking a little ragged from slug damage but I've learned where not to put them.

In the next week or so I'll get them into pots, and I'm hoping to have them planted out by the time I go on holiday on 9th June.

I planted one out in the border yesterday, and the other (which was looking poorly but seems to have revived) will wait until Sherry returns later today for positioning. There is so much in our garden that we are running out of room!

I put mine out on a platform on the decking yesterday, out of reach of all but airborne slugs, then worried that the flock of sparrows that hangs around our garden might see them as a healthy snack. Fortunately, no damage was done.
