Nightjar's look ridiculous. Mine are pitiful by comparison, after such a good start. But them I'm a rookie at all this growing stuff malarkey.

we're all rookies Wine Legs. If the slugs take a liking to your plants there's little an expertise in growing can do about it.
It's what they look like in September that matters

One of mine has been well and truly munched, but the other which is in a different location, so far is ok.

I'm spooked now. I'm going to put my big pots on a platform on the decking where the slugs don't go, possibly because the sparrows get to the slugs first. It worked for the seedlings.

I’ve put some copper tape around the bottom of the munched plant. Hopefully that might help. No problem with sparrows though. They’ve been eating the ants at the top!

I found a SLUG in my pots way up on the window sill! They've now been liberally sprinkled with little blue pellets & the offending bugger is DEAD!

I smashed a huge snail near my munched Pike’s Peaks earlier. Hoping it was the culprit.

I’ve resorted to a few little blues to get the blighters that are flying to the top leaves. Clearly the ants are not doing a good enough job, though now I think about it that was the one that didn’t have an ants nest in the roots when I planted them out.
