Heard it referenced on the politics show at lunchtime by a Labour MP.

The Conservative government did not carry out a legally required assessment of how greenlighting the use of a banned pesticide, described as a “death blow to wildlife”, would affect some of the most important nature sites, documents have revealed. The previous government gave emergency approval this year for sugar beet farmers to use Cruiser SB for the fourth year in a row. A single teaspoon of this pesticide is enough to deliver a lethal dose to 1.25 billion bees. In granting approval, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) went against the advice of the Health and Safety Executive and the UK expert committee on pesticides. These bastards should never get in power again. Ever. Corrupt, destructive, uncaring. Never ever vote for these people who put profit over everything. |

I think the ban on that pesticide has been lifted every year or period that it was up for renewal. So it's effectively never been banned for the last umpteen years. Criminal. Don't get me started on farming as an industry. I live in a rural area and am in constant disagreement with neighbours, should I ever open my mouth. Great news on new Labour government immediately getting to work on permissions for onshore wind turbines. Just needs to accelerate. G |

HG. Personal question. No right or wrong, no need to even answer. Are you vegan?

Hi MaTT. No, I'm a veggie and a poor one at that! No meat, no fish, no milk, no eggs, but still do cheese, yoghurts etc. and I'm not rigorous in my policing of anything - so if there is a bit of meat, or animal based product (gelatine etc.) in food, I won't always spot that. I also * still wear leather (though buy clothes and shoes so infrequently, the volume will be low!), * fly occasionally (that's a big one, obv - we have family in SE England and NW Scotland and sometimes time is very short. But maybe half a dozen flights in last 10 years prob?), * my wife still has a diesel 4x4 (very little mileage though, needs it for towing horse trailer), and a petrol mower (trying to change all to electric) * we have many animals - dog, 6 horses, all of which are carbon emitting, * also son and grandson (they say not having kids is best thing you can do for the planet! ) * the house is still oil heating (though we're trying to use it as little as possible and put in electric heating where we can), * we still buy new things when we should be repairing or re-using things * I eat too much processed food and ready meals that come in plastic packaging (I'm not good at and yes just too lazy to cook properly) So yes, lots bad. Can call my a hypocrite, but I'm trying to do as many things as I can, though I know there's loads more that I should be doing. Out of interest, why the ask?! G |

bbc.co.uk Climate Change Committee recommends rebalancing of tax on gas vs. electricity. Seems like a simple lever to move the dial towards electric heating, but need to protect those who can't change, but who still need help to heat their homes too. Mustn't end up just a tax on the poor. Need better support for improved insulation for our aged UK housing stock too. G |

I agree with the CC recommendation but I think its pushing creating an "imbalance" of taxes towards gas. I've always thought it would be good to move to taxation of carbon within our system. Frequent flier/driver = frequent (and higher) levies. |
