The Doctor K Cup

98 watchers
The seventh annual Doctor K Cup will take place on Saturday October 19th 2024

How to join in

Firstly, add the 2024 Doctor K Cup to your Fetch portfolio.

All you need is a GPS watch or app. On the day, RUN AT LEAST 5K WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR WATCH. The Fetch Benchmark system will pull out your fastest 5k from your run (so you can include it as part of your long run if you like). The person who gets closest to their prediction will be declared the winner (though the judges decision is final!).

It would be lovely if you could upload your 'K' pics to the gallery (make a K shape with your fingers) to help us remember Doctor K and all the Fetchies we have lost.

NB A GPS watch reporting 5.00km will do so from 4995 metres onwards, but you MUST run at least 5000 metres or more. To avoid disappointment add an extra 10 seconds on to the end of your run, just to make sure.

I am travelling to Inverness on Saturday so I doubt very much I will manage a 5k, but I will run the first and last 5k of Loch Ness on Sunday for Dr K.

And I'm sort of not doing it right because I've put down as a predicted time, a time that is unachievable! Sort of "run as fast as I can and see how close I can get to the time that I almost certainly can't do". At least it eliminates the chance that I will be *quicker* than my estimated time!

I will be wearing a watch but I promise not to look at it (or I'll pull a sleeve down over it or something!) :-) G

I was planning to put my Garmin in my shorts pocket so I couldn't look at it while I run but I could record my training. Is that ok?

I also expect to be carrying my watch out of sight because I'm touristing and want to pee on the Conquercise lamppost.

It's totally alien to me to run without my Garmin - but I never use it as a pace guide and rarely, if ever, look at it when actually running. I figure that I'm doing the best I can on a particular day and looking at my watch isn't going to change anything. That's the main reason i haven't signed up to this. sorry.

I ran with my Garmin hidden last time. Under a buff I think.

I will be tail-walking a parkrun so my pace will depend on someone else's pace. If I wear my watch (doubtful) I will set the screen to HR only.

There was a post way back saying that if you really want the detail, having it in a pocket or bag or something is fine.
Since I am a bit obsessive about the detail, I was thinking about wearing mine but having the display set to show something utterly useless for pacing, like atmospheric pressure or cadence or sunset time :)

My pace may also depend on someone else's pace, unless they're sandbagging :)

About This Thread

Maintained by Joopsy
2024 Instructions

Add the following race to your portfolio:

fetcheveryone.com/races/the-doctor-k-cup-10329609

Enter your predicted time by October 18th (the day before the run).

On the 19th October, run at least 5k WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR WATCH OR GETTING ANY PACING HELP!!!

RESULTS WILL BE POSTED HERE:

fetcheveryone.com/doctorkcup.php

Fetch will extract the results by looking at your benchmarks for 5k (so for your own sake, avoid tunnels, tall buildings, heavy tree cover, pylons etc). If you are running a local 5k loop, please add a bit on, just to make sure that your watch registers at least 5k's worth of data. But no peeking!

The person who is closest to their predicted time will win the 'Doctor K Cup' for one year.

NB Doctor K was a big parkrun fan - so you can do your run at parkrun, but ***PLEASE*** make sure you cover at least 5000 metres. A GPS watch reporting 5.00km will do so from 4995 metres onwards, but you MUST run at least 5000 metres or more. To avoid disappointment add an extra 10 seconds on to the end of your run, just to make sure.
