Possibly, I'm working definitely not for free.

And I would very much appreciate an answer from those who swore fealty.

Can we realistically have a Commonwealth without a monarchy? We won two World Wars in the 20th Century backed by a very large contingent of soldiers from it. For many, they had no reason to be involved in either conflict based on their location and would probably have stayed out of it if they and all other existing Commonwealth nations had been independent republics.

As I said previously, you may or may not agree with the monarchy but it is and has been a very important part of our society.

If anything, I would prefer the monarch to have more authority than to simply give royal ascent to acts of parliament. There have been some quite damaging ones over the past 30 years. The only question should be is whether the monarch should rule or reign.

Maybe nobody on here did? It’s an archaic thing / part of the service that goes back to when there was feudal law. I suppose in the medieval days that was the closest you could get to a promise of maybe not getting stabbed in the back (literally) by a rival.

I believe it was brought in this time as a way of slimming down the event - in 1953 it took a fair few hours for the hobnobs in their gowns to individually pledge allegiance. This was put in to cut all that out. The only ‘Lord’ to pledge allegiance in that way was The Prince of Wales.

You know, richmac, not Everything is literal?

Are you seriously arguing that the monarchy is a good thing because it allows the country to cling to the last remains of it's empire?

And suggesting that the commonwealth is a good thing because it would supply cannon fodder to this country if it was invaded?

You know NATO is a thing and the UK is a member of it? I think I'd rather have the US obligated to defend me than say Grenada.

Also, you actually want an unelected guy to have more power?

No, the wars are just an example. Until the UK joined the EEC, we did much more trade with our Commonwealth partners. Now we have left the EU, might that be encouraged to restart?

The monarchy has a thousand years of conquest, exploitation, treachery and despotism at its door. It’s largely been de-fanged because of, you know, democracy, universal suffrage and cleaving to fundamental principles of human rights and equality under the law. We really don’t want to go back down the road of giving them more power. We ain’t Saudi Arabia. Not yet, anyway.

Wowsers, commonwealth and more power? Yes, we have, and do have some shocking people in government but we have a chance to remove them every five years. Do we really want to give more power to a family who have paid millions to protect one of their own against someone he never met, (and definitely didn’t sweat allegiance 😂).

I genuinely scratch my head at the whole thing but you have really puzzled me Phil.

You're conveniently mis remembering history there.

You're right though before we joined the EEC we did much more than trade with those countries, because they were within the empire, we stole their wealth and treated the people rather badly, the common wealth provided no troops in either WW1 or 2 the empire did.

Why did the empire become the common wealth? Because self determination of people's was part of the USA's demands for entering into WW2.

Not so romantic now is it?

Also why would any of those former colonies want to do business with the UK? They can get better deals elsewhere.

And yes phal its definitely an archaic thing. I think we can agree on that one.

About This Thread

So will you be waving your little union jack and pledging your allegiance and scoffing coronation chicken or quiche at a street party?

Or ignoring the whole bloated exhibition of flummery and forelock tugging to inherited privilege and finding more important things to do?

I'm in the latter camp :-)
