It is, Ally, and you'll only have sea birds for company out on the Solway coast ;)

My training schedule next week has 11 miles so I’ve just entered the Alloa Half Marathon. Better running with some company than on yer lonesome.

I'm half contemplating a half marathon next weekend too. But I'm not convinced I want the company enough to part with thirty-odd quid for a course I've run lots of times before.

Minimag were you fuelling/hydrating well in that 22 miler? I find that can have a significant effect on HR.

I think you will go sub 4 easily unless you overcook yourself in training or set off too fast on race day. I don't think how you feel in long runs has much bearing on how you will feel in the race tbh - my long runs are always mega slow compared to my actual MP and they still seem to do the job in training the endurance.

auburnette, I think you have me sussed. I dont fuel or hydrate well. I find gel's sickly, and cant actually eat whilst running, so bars arent much use either.
I had (co-incidentally), just been researching just that, and the consensus seems to be a gel every 45 minutes. I would be throwing up after the 2nd one.
My usual long run has me stopping half way to force a gel down, eating a bar, and forcing that down with a 500ml energy drink. That is on a 20 mile run.
I dont usually run my best after that!

I don't use gels, I don't take water on training runs unless 18+ miles. I do try and use electrolyte drinks in marathons alternating with water. I also take jelly babies in a waist belt in a marathon and try to remember to eat them.
We're all different and I do drink a litre of water 6 evenings a week when I'm at work so quite hydrated most of the time.

If you're still searching for a perfect fuel how about Maurten? It has a weird texture like melted jelly babies (better than it sounds) but it sits super nicely in your stomach. Failing that, maybe something like tailwind or ucan which comes in drinks form?

Festive Flier I couldn't imagine running longer than 13 or so without fuel / water but that's largely because I use fuelling to distract me from the boredom that can set in! πŸ˜‚
