Hrs are a funny thing in how personal they are. My hr yesterday was 136 average. Typically my lowest end recovery runs are mid 120s to 130. My average hr in a mara is mid to high 160s.

I don't think the optical gives errors but I understand it would read lower than a chest strap (although that could be bllx).

As JDA says it seems repeatable. I can see the odd rogue bit of data early on in a easy run if there's a poor connection. But those tempo run a are always done after 5 or 5m run out to the flatter lanes in the middle of a 20ish miler. As before as long as I use the same device then I compare.

I would expect to av very close to 150 with a max of 160+ in a HM ( low 1.22 a couple of times in last year or so) using that 245.

I can gauge fitness from those types of training runs and know what sort of race shape that equates to, which was my point for re the data put forward by nhb.

My optical reads a wee bit lower than the chest strap. It’s that time of year when my transition to having to use the chest strap is almost upon me, so my stats will look worse

I'm 47, and my resting HR is typically high 47 to 52, last night it was 58.
But my running HR is mid 130s on a slow easy run, and mid 160s for a tempo run. High 160s for a race. It's the Forerunner 955- I'm assuming it's accurate as I don't think it's measuring too low for resting HR or too high for running HR.

I looked back over several years of garmin averages, including 4 or 5 watches in that time. Average resting hr is generally low 40s (42 this year). Average high was typically high150s, except this year when it's 153. That's the lowest average since 2017 so definitely seeing a fall there. I'd never noticed that before so thanks for the tip off guys. Current watch is a fenix 6.

My RHR of 36 has pretty much stayed static over my periods of running although my marathon HR has reduced by around 20 bpm from 155 to 135 as measured by the Fenix 7.

I don't use chest straps anymore as they generally start off accurate, then start to degrade after a few months throwing spikes as the contacts wear, even the so called good brands like Polar and Garmin.

I find watches are very good for tracking RHR, and gentle exercise.

I'm not sure if it's the movement, tightness on wrist, or sweat that can get in the way but as the effort rises the accuracy drops off a cliff for me. I'd not trust the watch HR at anything over a walk/plod.

I've had garmin chest straps for years but switched to the polar arm monitors a few years ago and find them great - The data makes sense, you can recharge them easily, wash the strap and they last years.

My RHR is usually mid-high 30s, has been as low as 32bpm when marathon training.

Max HR has probably dropped in recent years from 172ish to 165ish (give or take a couple beats).

My ranges:

Easy runs in the 110-118bpm range
Steady below 133bpm
Marathon usually rises from 135ish to high 140s near the end.

Have raced HMs at around 150bpm average a few years ago but would still be high 140s now.

Delurks.

I once set up my watch to show/record HR both my chest strap and the wrist at the same time. It was way, way off from the wrist, so much so that it is unusable. It wasn’t even consistent in how it was out - sometimes it was reading way too high, others too low. I’m talking up to about 20 beats out, either way. Totally useless for me, although RHR seems about right. My watch fits correctly, is tight enough, doesn’t let light in underneath, etc. It is just very poor (Garmin Fenix 6x pro).
