Bowman, one thing I notice is if I have a long lay off with injury and come back, it takes me a long time to get back to anywhere near where I was. Others seem to get back to more or less where they were a lot quicker than me, even if I do what I can with Zwifting, watching the weight etc, when injured. We’re all different, and ‘comparison is the thief of joy’, as they say. You can only work with what you’ve got.

Yes, another aspect to consider Big_G, haven't been injured over along time from this kind of level of fitness, so i do not know how my body work there. Also i guess that's one thing that gets worse by age maybe. |

I read this Letsrun thread ages ago when I was looking at Hadd training, I will revisit one day but the title of it came to me so thought it might be of interest to some on here...iirc it goes into detail about different training approaches for different types and I was trying (badly) to apply that to me yesterday. I often think natural talent gets confused with 'type of runner'. Fast twitch runners get fit quickly, but can't hold peak long before needing to go back to base training, whereas slow twitch seem to take longer to build up but can peak for a lot longer. letsrun.com |

Good question Frosty The Bowman 🇸🇪 I did build up and increase miles over time each year. I also had a couple of injury impacted years that slowed progress for me which was annoying. I also learned to slow my running down and learn more about my body and the heart rate. I had many marathons where things went not to plan, but once I ran 3:02 I knew I was back on track. I had a few good races and near misses but eventually two things made the difference I switched to a jack daniels plan which worked better. Or maybe it was just a change from always doing P and D. I also moved office and suddenly had more cycling miles each week oh and the Nike 4% shoes maybe helped as well. |

On the ability question, I think everyone has more in them Than they realise. When I started running I just wanted to complete a marathon. When I ran my second in 3:19 I declared to my dad I had just run a time no one in the family would ever beat. Little did I know I would better than many times as would my SiL People say to me they cannot run, but I think we all can and the body just needs time to adapt. We all have different ceilings though and you need to work hard to get close to that. It needs dedication and actually for me a lot of running well is in the mind once you start to get the body used to the physical impact. I don’t have any particular talent, but I reckon if I started running younger, I would have run faster times. However I probably wouldn’t still be running now. |

My thoughts are that there are many versions on what people term talent. Natural pace , spend of recovery , ability of the body to adapt, ability to handle training load, etc. Also throw in the mental side you have a whole load of variables that differs from one person to another and all massively effect a training programme and marathon. Of course the elite have high ability in most ascepts of Talent and dedictation and unlimited time (well no distractions anyway, still only 24 hrs in a day) Also going back to a post a while back saying GFA is achieveable for everyone, to be fair other coaches have said the same to times down to 2:30 or even faster. |

I don’t think everyone can run a GFA but I do believe most people can run better than they believe they can if they want to and are prepared to work at it.

I do believe it but we are taking out all other variables like having a job and training perfectly. Also age will play a part but would say most 20-30 yr olds sh/be capable of close to 3hrs |
