I always have a couple of Eccles cakes stuffed down my shorts. Never know when I might get peckish.

Thanks all, super helpful. I was feeling that a vest was going to slow me down and feel that a bottle and gels is the way to go, plus a good fuel up the day and hour before. Wondering if caffeine gels have helped people, I use the Tailwind with caffeine and it seems to keep me going on longer training runs.

I wouldn't race in a hydration vest. try them in training Ed. I found the caffeine gels gave me almost instant stomach cramps so they're not for me.

I try to avoid the water stations at 5km and 10km. Too crowded. In Amsterdam I did it like this: just before the start I drank half a bottle of sports drink, at 5 km only a gel, I also skipped the drink station at 10 km and at 11 km the family was there with another bottle of sports drink. And then later I could use my own gels + take water from the supply.

I really liked that plan @Charlesvdw it makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately I didn't have my family watching at Abingdon but should be able to organise them for the next attempt!

I try to get in early and often with water, Iโd rather be cold for as long as possible and a fair bit goes on my head. But mancs isnโt congested even at 5k.

I always aim for the end of the water station. The start of the water station is always congested so I aim for the end and helps with not having to slow down. I have missed the last bottle once or twice, but just asked other runners for their bottle before they chuck it - the vast majority of runners never finish a bottle anyway. |

Hi gang, back after some time lurking. Good to see lots of ace chat on here. I'm half way through P&D for the second time aiming for my second sub 3 in Seville in Feb. I'm at the very tired and ravenous phase! Last year in Seville running behind the pacer was carnage at the water stations. I'll start in front this time and hopefully put a few minutes into them for a less stressful ride and a pb. |
