Feels a bit weird that I haven’t applied for gfa 😬
Finally starting to feel human and might even brace a run on Saturday. The break has made me realise that my head wasn’t quite in it for York so I think I’m going to bail out and concentrate on some shorter stuff for the rest of the year. I feel like I’ve lost the love of marathon running at the mo

It’s funny Chris, I’m glad I didn’t enter an Autumn/Winter marathon this year, but I’ve missed the fitness and focus you have when marathon training.
I’m never going to get myself properly fit for a 5k, sub 16:30 would be the next target and I’m never going to get ear there outside of making that my goal race with lots of mileage (that works better for me than speed sessions).
I’ll try and get into decent 10k shape with more mileage and some controlled tempos late autumn, but until then I just can’t be bothered running them just so I can maybe get to 30 secs outside my PB.

Must admit immediately after Mancs I was seriously thinking of missing it next year. But starting up the training has got me champing at the bit again, even as I'm struggling to regain fitness. 40 mins of threshold was a bit of a tall order today but I got it done, a bit slower than I'd hoped but I'm not a million miles away.
I'll leave you in the sidebar just for a little longer Chris if that's ok in case you change your mind
Brunski, perhaps if you want a serious go at 5k a good plan would be to work it into (or just after) your next marathon campaign..

Just popping in briefly. Not really running much at the moment but expect to get back to it in the autumn. Hopefully, the low/zero mileage will let the body rest rather than letting too much of the building blocks slide. I decided to sit out the GFA for next year, and will either go for a lower key marathon, or another ultra.
Good to see a lot of enthusiasm for the next year already on the thread!

Definitely JDA, thinking 2 or 3 weeks prior to the marathon instead of racing a half. I’ve been sceptical about how much I get from a raced half pre-marathon and am sure a 20 miler with 13 or so at marathon pace would be just as much of a boost, and maybe better physically.
Glad to hear you’ve got the marathon bug back as well, I’m already missing the feeling of getting fitter.

In other news, a couple of days ago I entered Vale of York half (15 Sept), and then the very next day discovered a new half the week before in Ayr where I regularly visit my parents. I won't be running both, so anyone want a transfer for the Vale of York race?

For me, the traditional pre-marathon half is more of a fitness test (and usually a good chance of a PB) than training piece per se.

Hope you manage to shift the VoY place, its a bit soon for me but if you can’t shift it I can mention to some of my running mates. I know it’s a popular run and you should have no problem getting a taker for a transfer!
