I think racing different ways can be a way to learn about yourself. Not that I do it very often. 1500 would probably be the distance I choose for that if I was doing that but for those coming down for marathon can see how doing it at 5000 makes sense.

I always look back at this one when I was probably in the best shape I ever was and felt like I shgould have given more! Kept it (semi) controlled. I mainly lent to the side of caution when racing!! 1) 1m - 5:50(5:50/m) 126cal 10.3/11.04mph 2) 1m - 5:48(5:48/m) 126cal 10.33/10.71mph 3) 1m - 5:44(5:44/m) 125cal 10.46/11.04mph 4) 0.08m - 25(5:34/m) 10cal 10.78/11.17mph |

That's always the unknown isn't it; finish a race wondering if you were too cautious when you've PBd when the stats also show you ran perfectly. You'll never know if 1s faster in that first mile would have cost 2s slower in the subsequent miles, and no-one can prove it one way or another!

That looks perfect to me @Daz Love! My PB of 16:26.63 in 2019, I went through 3000 in 9:56.45 (I know as it was given as an official split that appears on PO10, also I know my first km was around 3:20), so basically 16:15 (3:15 per km) pace for the last 2000. Maybe you leave a few seconds on the table but better than losing a load the other way. For context, I ran 9:44.59 for 3000 10 days before that race which was a PB even though I thought I was capable of faster, so I don't think I'd have truly believed in a faster start even if I'd gone with it when the going got tough. |

Hard to argue against a small negative split. It might feel like you left something on the table but also means you can run with really good form right through to the finish line. Efficiency matters as well as perceived effort.

Agree with that. Also in terms of perceived effort, in my PB the last 2000 felt amazing but I believe that was simply down to everything in the time being positive rather than it actually being 'easy'. I was 17th at 3000 and finished 7th. Passing 10 people in 5 laps is going to make things feel good even if you're working hard.

Surely splits need to be compared against HR/RPE when wondering if could have gone harder? If mine hits 175bpm early, ramps up gradually to 185 after 2 miles and I push on without pace fading finishing around my max 192-194 then I feel like that's the best I could give on any day. I could try going out at 165bpm or 180bpm then seeing what that does for the later part of the race, I'm pretty sure at 165bpm it'd be a few seconds slower and I'd be many places further back due to the accordian effect of letting folks go at the start. At 180bpm I'd likely be crawling the last half mile or so. |

I didnt wear a HRM back in that race above but here is the same race a couple of years on when I did have one on. Always found could get to pretty much as high as I go after mile 1 (highest I have ever seen in a race was 198) and then hold it to the end in a 5k. Thats pretty much exactly the same time as the one above but this race felt much harder (hence me thinking I could have given more in the first example!!) This was the limit for my fitness at that time. 1) 1m - 5:43(5:43/m) 181/190bpm 96cal 10.49/12.48mph 2) 1m - 5:57(5:57/m) 192/194bpm 111cal 10.07/10.6mph 3) 1m - 5:50(5:50/m) 194/195bpm 110cal 10.29/10.73mph 4) 0.08m - 28(5:46/m) 194/195bpm 9cal 10.41/10.6mph |

I'm not going to ever race to HR and at that point I never had HR in races anyway but I know I was close to the limit in that race and there was really much need for review.

I think lots of people feel like their best races feel easier than other races, but that's probably why they end up as your best races.
