Just had a thought about dkippping being an effective method of cross training. I believe boxers skip so it must have benefits. Does anyone have any insights or experience?

How very timely. I just got a new skipping rope and am aiming to do short boughts to add more movement
I cant do many skips yet. Do sets of 50 which will seem pathetic! But aiming to do a sort of skip and dumbell thing in the garden to add movement to my day
Be great to hear any ideas

I believe boxers skip because it strengthens the legs, is good cardio and improves hand eye coordination. Don't think I've ever managed more than two skips without getting the rope tangled around my feet!

I used to do cross fit, whichnincluded skipping. Very good for calls, but also tiring so be careful how much you do....I could get to 100 or so...not so hot at the jumping doubles type things though which is a bit more plyometric for more of the legs rather than just lower leg.

I do some skipping a couple times a week. There are utube videos on technique. Young teenager in garden across from me also does skipping, he does drills, manages on one leg etc. I am just doing varying speeds, make sure rope is correct length for you.

I’d be interested to know more. I assume it’s really good exercise but wonder how much of an overlap with running.

I've been skipping as part of a circuit that I've been doing in my backyard. I don't know if there are any specific benefits to runners - perhaps maintaining elasticity and plyometric benefits in the tendons/calves? I remember reading somewhere that it's good for the lymph system but I don't really know why or what that really means!
But I find it adequate cardio when skipping for a longer duration. My circuit consists of 4mins of skipping followed by 8 different strength exercises (30secs) using a kettlebell, finishing with a plank variation.
Then repeating it all. Knackered!

Google dan the skipping man for some YouTube videos. We does some 4x 1mins with 20 secs rest which is good. It only took a few days before I could skipping continuously. Remember to focus on technique and not on speed!

I've occasionally used skipping - including being instructed by a coach to do so - as part of my training.
It's very useful in lots of ways, several listed above by NavyAl.
Another benefit is that it's cheap and doesn't use much space. Even 'pretend' skipping is good! No rope required so no danger of tripping up.
