Ian - that's a great hilly run from you. You need to work on those hamstrings as potential weak spot for cramps, as you've occasionally suffered before.

My hamstrings are fine it's my quads that are singing to me today.

Vrap - unspent allocated funds shout at me to be spent too. I still have a decent amount of this year's budget unspent.

Big G - I take it you got a place.

You could stay anywhere if the Metro is running, @Big_G (it wasn't this year due to flood damage). I've chosen apartments in the Ruzafa area for both the half and the full marathon next year, but this year we stayed in the Sercotel Sorolla Palace a few miles to the north which has a bus that goes from outside the hotel to very close to the marathon start and enough decent restaurants on the doorstep.

Shades, yes, just got a place.

Vrap, I’d booked accommodation a little while ago that is near a metro. Hadn’t considered the flood damage this year. I watched a YouTube video of a Scottish sub-elite and he stayed very close to the start/finish, but not ideal for sight seeing, although he had a car I think.

Shades-Yes, they have definitely been my weak spot whenever I have cramps it's usually there they start.
Just been listening to a podcast for Comrades,it's partly done by the official Comrades coach,he says to only do 3 runs of marathon distance or more, need to relook at my plan as pretty sure I've got quite a lot more than that down.He suggests 1 marathon, 1 around 30m and 1 a bit more, the last 2 around Comrades pace to get used to it,practise fuel etc.

Big G - good, as that was quite a queue.

Ian - I suspect for Comrades there are hundreds of podcasts/articles on training for the event. A bit like us with London, you can find advice saying one 18 miler is sufficient for a first timer.

Personally I would run more marathons than you have planned, maybe 2 on consecutive days or 2 with one day's rest in-between, I'd look to repeat that, maybe even with 50k distance.
I would want to be peaking at least 70mpw preferably more for 2-4 week.

I did an 100 mile week and several marathons before I ran my 2 ultra PB'S, 6 hour race and 50 miler. I ran those ultras 6 days apart.

I would guess Comrades pace is roughly one minute slower per mile than marathon pace?

You need to have a plan that suits you. You know what gets you to peak fitness and feeling strong, that sense of being almost invincible and hungry to race. That is what will get you round feeling good.

Ian - re hamstrings. There's some advice that stretching hamstrings won't really help.

You could try doing Romanian deadlifts, you don't need heavy weights it's more the technique. That should strengthen the hamstrings, also glutes too.

Look at the prices now and be glad you booked a while ago! Accommodation costs for the period around the marathon have flown up even since a week ago when I booked ours. Hoping that next year we'll be there for the Christmas lights going on. We left just a little too early this year.

Shades-My plan had 8 runs of 26 or more,no back to backs though so I'll consider that.
The medal I'm aiming for is between 7:30 and 9 hours so quite a wide window.I will probably be aiming around 8:30 depending on how the next few months go.If I get to 3:30 shape for Barca then 8:30 is just over a minute per mile slower.

Ian - 8:30 is a good and achievable target for you. Exciting 😃

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
