That all sounds promising with your back.I ran a mile less than you 12.5 and it still feels hard and I am always nervous about it.I have done maybe 7 of them and I am waiting for them to feel easy.

Oh yes thanks Long run up to 14 miles,1@ 8 miler,1 @10 miler,PT day,6-7 miler and then 5 miles x2 with one 5 miler either 400m intervals or tempo run.

WP - that sounds a fairly challenging half training plan, but well within your capabilities.

I found today's run hard enough, but now post run I'm feeling fine. I've got to do some more of these longer runs in the next few weeks.

Shades well done on hitting the 40mpw hopefully no niggles to follow.

WP 12.5miles is a tough run, not sure if they ever feel easy.

Keith, glad the start is improved, the toilet queues were bad for such a staggered start.

Big thank thanks for the offer on checking, I’m probably going to use it as a training run. If I do feel okay on the day then if I call it at 42km I’ll class it as a marathon, I’ve no plans to run 100 nor join 100MC if I did.

Set myself a minimum of 9 miles and options to stop at 12 and 13. It was warm and felt 9 was enough and meant I popped in to mums after before catching a bus back.

Off to Manchester for work on Wednesday have a few run routes and a parkrun planned, going to UK championships athletics on the Sunday. Running will depend on beer consumption and when/ if England are playing in the cricket / football.

Rob - a lot warmer in your neck of the woods so 9 is enough in that weather. I went out at 6 a.m. so had the coolest part of the day.

You never know about joining the 100 club so keep your stats just in case 😉

UK championships, that's worth seeing. Good you can combine work and your sporting interests 🙃

Shades: You are adapting well to your long runs after such a lay off from them.I think I have one to many runs posted as I run 6 days....LOL I have pencilled in recovery weeks every third week.

I have had a two hour nap! So not recovering from them as I would like but 6 years between this sort of training is a long time.

Rob:Thanks for that home truth but I rather know it is never going to feel easy.
That sounds a pleasant run and nice to combine with a mum visit.

Rob, it has been pointed out to me elsewhere that the map of the route for that event currently shows the Tri run route, which is 6km according to the map, although the text description does mention 7km. But the event does count for 100MC purposes, as Shades mentioned, but I guess check the route distance (although I know you said you’re not worrying about 100MC).

WP - I haven't done any training runs over 10 miles for about 5 years ! I was quite happily running 50 mpw, 5 x 8 mile runs and one 10 mile run for many many months. But I was running marathons from April to early November until my knee injury April 2023. I did my GFA times without any long training runs but that was after a very long spell of 50mpw weeks.

But it's a much longer time away from the longer stuff for you as you haven't been doing the longer races so maybe needs a longer time to adjust back to distance stuff.

I do take electrolytes in my drink when I run longer and a salt tablet when I finish the run.

You definitely don't need to run long every weekend, every other weekend would be plenty for half marathon training. Especially if that makes the longer runs more enjoyable.

I only have 7 weeks before IOM and missed a couple of longer runs already, calf niggle and a cold/sore throat. I've just planned a route of 15 for next weekend.

Shades I planned to get up early but hit snooze and the rest was history. Hopefully you can stay niggle free as you build the distance for IOM, how strict/ close are you to cut offs?

Big G the 7km is either last years distance or a typo (I think it was last years distance), the published map is for 6km/3.75 miles.

WP I had a little snooze too! Let the length of snoozes be our benchmarks for progress.

Seen on twitter/fb Steve Edward’s is clearing out trophies and medals. I always wondered what he’d do once he done the 1000th for the world record. I know he has done some podcasts since the 1000 just wondered if he had said what plans he had?

Rob - I am an early riser and a poor sleeper so I'm happy to leap out of bed at 4:30 to 5 a.m. every morning. I love the quiet bright mornings too.

The IOM marathon has a 5:30 time limit, which I can't make right now. The course is a two lapper and the criteria is to finish the first lap in 2:40. They do allow an early start of 30 minutes which I've already asked for and I know there are at least a couple of other runners going to start early. Last year there were about 6 runners with finish times slower than 5:30 and 3 over 6 hours, last finisher 6:10. That last finisher has entered this year too.
I don't think they would pull me off as I know most of the marshalls, but can't risk that there might be a marshall I don't know at the halfway point. They don't have a sweeper bus so I just have to make the first lap and I'm pretty sure they'll happily leave me to potter round.

Realistically I think I can finish in about 6 hours, hopefully just under, we'll see.

I saw that post on FB from Steve Edwards about ditching some of his age group prizes. (I've got rid of most of mine too).
I don't know what his plans are. I expect he's taking some time out to recover his health, he was carrying a painful niggle or two or the last few months. He's never been keen on ultras so can't see him looking to start running them. I can't see him giving up marathons either, we'll see.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
