Shades, and the road marathons are being watered down even more in 100MC, in my opinion, as now events like the RED one are counted as road. So things like the 100MC award for ‘most road marathons in a year’ can also be skewed heavily by things like that.

WP, good news you’re feeling better and your RHR is showing that. Ian has done one I think, and I’ve done a couple of track marathons - I hated the first, tolerated the second. I can do the distance, but on the first track one I remember getting to 10K (25 laps) and it dawning me that I still had 80 laps to go. It really messed with my head the first time, but the second time I knew more what to expect and was okay. On occasion, and during Covid times, there have been 24hr races shown live on YouTube which I found somehow enthralling.

Ian, yeah, I can understand what you mean about being a bit disappointed. Your training was going well and obviously this looks like it’s going to change how you run your race, but it’s good he said you can still run it.

Rob, nice run there. Do you have a rough plan of what you’d like to do prior to Stevenage?

Keith, you’ve got one coming up too. How are you doing?

I went along to the club last night, not to run, but for food. It’s Ladies 10k this weekend and there were recce runs for that, and food afterwards. I haven’t actually helped out at any of our races this year, but I’ve had a lot on, and I do other things for the club outside of marshalling at races so I don’t feel too bad. But I’ll try and marshal one or two next year if I can. Also, turns out there are a few more going to Copenhagen on club the trip, but not running the race.

That sounds like when I went for the mile walk and found it too exhausting took all my strength to get back home. Also high RHR(I thought it had dropped slightly)

Ah yes I have heard of the Barry 40 miler maybe something to think about in around 4 years time as I don't think 13 miles as long run would somehow cut it ;-) It reality it would be like running 45 laps of the rec and I get bored after 4....LOL
It has reminded me about the old father time race they put on so will keep an eye open for that one.

I got my first sub 4 at a track race,so maybe it's skewed my memory but I enjoyed it and would happily do one again at some point.I think it helped as I went to track the week before and worked out how far my watch measured as so many people were complaining about the distance vs their watches.
Goes off to Google track races.....

I think the most, errrrm, ‘interesting’ (ie, completely bonkers) one is the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race in New York, ran around a block that is around half a mile long. Here’s an old BBC report about it.

bbc.co.uk

Adharanand Finn has interviewed a few people who have done it, and the mindset is fascinating.

Ian, I think it was the first one I did, there was a guy who stopped when his garmin said he had done the distance. From memory he was 2 or 3 laps short, but on strava he was boasting about this achievement. It really wound me up at the time, as on the results it clearly showed he’d not done the full distance or required number of laps, but he was claiming it. No idea if he wants to get into 100MC, and the guy who vets the results I think is brilliant, but you can imagine something like that could slip through the net if he didn’t spot it.

I just checked mine and I measured 27.9m so if I'd gone off my watch I'd have stopped about 15 mins early.Amazing pacing though, finished with 46s to spare.

Big G - absolutely, 100MC are destroying marathon running and the Mickey Mouse events that they so strongly endorse IMHO are responsible for the demise of many of our what were well established road marathon. Although I don't think there's anything wrong with RED having their course measured and described as road, it is road. I classify my marathons by the running surface and that is 100% tarmac.

I've done 10 track races, never done a track marathon though and don't want to. For track I prefer timed events rather than defined distance. I've done 3 x 24 hour, 6 x 12 hour and one 6 hour.

Ian/Big G - I understand now that the newer Garmins can be used for track races with some accuracy, I think you have to do one lap and set that as a defined 400m lap on the watch. Don't think my Garmin is that sophisticated but I wouldn't use it anyway for that.

I know when I used to do Faversham 12 hour which was around a park, about 1km laps I think, the RO used to warn us that our GPS watches would overestimate the total distance and could be anything up to 5 miles for the fastest runners. We had lap counters.

Ian, I just checked the result from March 2020 (we didn’t know what was about to come then with Covid, did we!!) when I did that race and the chap is marked as 102 laps, in 4:15. So he’s almost a mile short.

Shades, yes, mine has a track mode as you describe, but I’ve never used it. If I do ever go to a track (apart from marathons I think I’ve only ever been 2 or 3 times) I’d calibrate it I think and see how it goes, or maybe try it out before hand to avoid potential confusion on race day.

Sounds like a lot of fun if you can mentally deal with the laps.I shall put on back burner for the moment.

Just over 4 miles for me this morning. I am aiming for 4-5 in between the 6 milers for a few weeks until i can increase the 6.Achilles felt okay not as painful as yesterday.

Big G - well that runner's result won't stand up to 100MC vetting. Unless of course he'd already done his 100th by then.

WP - But they're interesting events and worth having a go one day.

I don't plan to do another track race. I'd prefer to do a lap course of a park, more interesting and varied.

Haven't you got Cardiff Half in the next few weeks?

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
