Cal - I'm definitely not ruling Dublin out, that's why I've now focused my training on doing the distance by whatever means, run/walk.

There are no Guinness stations but I expect there's a good 40 pubs on the route. 🥴

Many years ago I worked with a guy from Dublin and I remember him telling me that the street his family lived in had 26 pubs!

I gave up alcohol in 2017 so I won't be able to use your method of pain relief 😅

That's another great photo.

See you've found the quote button!

Hadn’t realised you’d stopped drinking completely Shades. I stopped on NYD 2018!

Shades: That sounds a good plan as what you are doing at the oment not working.I hope you can find a path forward.I bet you can run/walk Dublin.

Cal Great photo

Not sure if you saw and I have no idea what it means but The Great Welsh Marathon is a qualifier for the Abbotts majors??

PT session 60k trap bar dead lift I feel this is my max at the moment as it is hard work. I opted to keep today as rest from running day.Hoping I can go further tomorrow.
PT has Achilles issues so has bought Hoka running shoes. Maybe another one to look at ?

Big G - gradually over the last few years I was only a light social drinker when out with friends. I've never drank at home. So I was considering stopping completely as there's no health benefits to alcohol at all and very poor nutrition. I had intended to drive to the Maverick's Christmas do and then run out there the following morning to collect the car. I've never enjoyed eating a meal and drinking alcohol, I'd prefer to do one or the other. So I drove to the Sandygate Inn and when I got there decided not to have any alcohol, thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the evening and then drove home. Have never had a drink since.

WP - I saw that about Great Welsh. There are age group entries available at the Abbott events for those that get qualifying times, so they will accept qualifying times from Great Welsh results.

Well done on your 60kg.

Hokas are popular with those that have achilles issues as they are of a rocker style. Might not work for you as I think the highest drop is 6mm, most models 4 or 5 mm.

Shades, I found the first few weeks quite hard, but once I got a few months in I didn’t miss it, and then once 12 months came up I didn’t see the point of adding it back in. I don’t really think about it now although I wish I could say it revolutionised my running, or somehow made weight loss so much easier, but if I said that I’d be lying :)

Big G - I didn't find it hard at all, but I don't go out so much now. Also because I was always an early morning runner that was more important to me than having a drink.

Just spoke to HA and they’re flying Bristol to Malaga and then catching train to Seville, which from a very quick Google takes a couple of hours. Opens up more, plus more affordable, flight options, and from looking at the flight times would avoid needing a hotel at Gatwick. Interesting!

WP - good news on selling your unused shoes, more cash to put towards future shoe purchases.

Big G - that sounds a good alternative and economical way to travel to Seville.

I'm looking at marathon cut off times. I have deferred entry (and pasty) at the Cornish. Just checked and they don't have a cut off time but marshalls stand down after 6 hours, that's OK for me as I know my way back. So all good as long as I'm not crocked from Dublin the week before.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
