You don’t need an accountant to run a business. We’ve done our own business accounts for a decade, including quarterly VAT. Admittedly there were a few things we couldn’t be bothered claiming (eg a fraction of heating costs), so it’s possible an accountant would have done a better job, but unlikely it would have been better enough to pay for their costs. We didn’t do it specifically to minimise tax of course, but rather because it was the appropriate way to run our affairs.

Jeez, the inability of people on this thread to have a rational debate is starting to grate. I don’t recall much recently where anyone has conceded even a minor point that someone else has made. I haven’t kittened anyone because even though I don’t agree with everyone, I find it interesting to hear views that contradict my own. This gives me cause to examine my own thinking and has honestly opened my mind in a lot of cases for which I am grateful. But the constant sniping needs to stop. This has become a distinctly unpleasant corner of the otherwise wonderfully supportive community that is Fetcheveryone. |

jda wrote: but rather because it was the appropriate way to run our affairs. If you're running a business, then that seems totally fair. Not sure I'd know where to start if it were me! But setting yourself up a personal business entity as suggested earlier to avoid paying tax just seems very dodgy to me. |

Setting up a business - at least in the form of a limited liability company - is very easy in this country and involves very little in the way of set up costs.

But setting yourself up as a ltd company to avoid paying tax is (to coin a phrase).... Just weird. Anyway in other news, Paul Marshall of GB news ownership fame (also owns the totally dodgy UnHerd - which regularly publishes false, misleading and often outright incendiary misinformation) has bought the Spectator. He's still after the Telegraph too |

And finally, don't forget it's the "debate" between Harris and the other one at 2am. I'm sure it'll be worth staying up for....not. |

I shan't be stopping up for the debate. Too late and too stressful. I hope she can at least hold her own even if she doesn't win by a KO.
