Their actions at Stonehenge were beyond stupid (and really a great way to coalesce people against your cause - I used to be generally supportive of them and XR) But lengthy prison sentences, especially in the current climate, isn't particularly helpful. Quite a selfish attitude towards future generations who will suffer from climate change. Stonehenge actions - valid IMO given the massive road building project that’s been talked about for a while

I think it's worth getting into the detail of what happened here.

I understand the protesters were jailed for conspiring after some very detailed planning to block to the M25. The last time the M25 was blocked under protest in a similar way its direct consequences included physical injury to police as well as damage, nuisance and of course a lot of expense to Jo public.

As the judge said, they crossed the line from campaigners to fanatics.

Trump considered inciting criminal damage to be worthy of promoting his personal belief after he lost the election and he's got a court case waiting for him on that.

And they haven’t solved all the problems built up over the last fourteen years in the fortnight or so that they’ve been in power. What a waste of time voting for them. They should have had it all sorted by now. Jeremy would have.

He saved the Number 4 bus route in Islington as well.

Carve his name with pride.

How much expense to Joe public can we expect from climate change? The oil and gas bosses you’re shilling for should be the ones in prison

Nothing to say expect to have a sneering pop at people who rely on public transport. Classy.

People can have all kinds of opinions on a - climate change and b - the impact on the public in respect of the nature of the protests. But it's a society lacking in basic democracy that jails peaceful protestors. We're heading for grim times. Only this week I believe 10 JSO supporters were arrested for having a coffee and preparing a protest. Something similar happened at a soup kitchen the other week.

Support for the jail terms, is akin to kissing the polished boot of an over-authoritarian society.

Fining people would normally be a reasonable starting point for civil disobedience.

Of course there will always be those who think we should lock up anyone who breaks the speed limit or drops a bit of litter. Building thousands more prison cells beats building hospitals after all.

I don't think that dropping an empty crisp bag is *quite* in the same category as disrupting one of the key transport arteries of the country...
