I can see no circumstances in which the Tories go back to the centre. But you can never say never.

Locally it seems that Labour paid the price for replacing a reasonably popular and well known candidate with some placeman. But better another Tory than a somewhat left-wing and pro-European Labour MP.

The tories don’t need to go back to the centre, they just need to hoover up the refuk vote (not even all of it) and there’s your 40% supermajority right there.

I would think he is the main "centrist" leadership candidate. It'll be interesting to see whether Tory MPs want to agree on a single candidate without going to their membership - suspect that's the only way that Hunt wins.

I think once Reform’s policies are more closely scrutinised they won’t get main stream support. At the moment they are a protest vote with a charismatic leader. He’s now going to have to actually work as a constituency MP and it will be interesting to see how much appetite he has for that

The Reform voters may ultimately be poorly-led but they are a substantial group and they are cheesed-off or racist enough, or both, to want a change from the status quo and Labour represent a vision that they either support or believe. They can’t be wished away as an inconvenient or fleeting protest.

As has been said elsewhere, policy and actions need to address the fundamental concerns without simply ‘pandering’ to the noise.

Well, we will see. Time to focus on the positive. The Tories are out. Some of them will no doubt wish to tickle Nigel’s tummy right away. Others will find him quite revolting. Let’s see how it pans out and in the meantime look for change.

John Burn-Murdoch, a data journalist at the FT, tweeted with some graphs and data this morning that the Tories didn't lose because of right / left wing, etc.

It was because they were:
* incompetent
* unfit to govern
* didn't understand Britain's problems
* lying bastards (okay paraphrasing this one!)

That's a damning indictment.

Why wouldn't Hunt start straight away?

If he's bat shit enough to want that job.

Just looking through the big hitters (!) who didn't get booted out the rump of the party is pretty appalling.

Braverman, Patel, Badenoch, IDS, Cleverley, Atkins. Only Hunt stands out as being more centrist. Don't know what the make up of the rest of the parliamentary party is like; that dynamic may be very important.
