I agree about the comment from Kinnock that Reform appeal is of simple "answers" (they aren't answers, they are slogans mostly) to complex questions. This is again why my "Make Democracy Great Again" (! ) campaign is so important. To explain why just "keep immigrants out" doesn't give you more and better jobs, depresses the overall economy etc. Why not properly supporting poorer communities leads to tension etc. |

I'm not convinced about breathing space argument. The landslide means there's not much excuse for not getting things done as the opposition can't stop anything via voting in the commons. Those out of power will always be judged less harshly

The party that has longstanding values of social justice and respect for human rights has won. Think about that when the fascists take over in France and the US. I'll take it for now. I have hope that change is coming. The alternative would have been desperate. |

So it seems the optimistic viewpoint is that the right continues to tear itself apart leaving Starmer free rein to do what he likes on a small minority of the vote. What an inspiring vision, I can see why people are so excited and enthused about our political systems. |

Hunt:- "Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are decent people.. I hope they use their majority to make much needed reforms to the NHS in the way that is difficult for the Conservative governments to do" Wow! |

Nellers wrote: I also think Reform will subside significantly as they can't actually do anything with only 4 MPs except shout impotently about how it's definitely not their fault, any of it, and it's all terrible. Farage succeeded in influencing things without MPs. Greens have mentioned Lucas's outsized influence as 1 MP this morning... |

What an inspiring vision, I can see why people are so excited and enthused about our political systems. That's not my optimistic view. My optimistic view is that Starmer takes on the Right and dismantles them. He has the ability to do that if he can make visible, tangible progress. We know change takes time; let's regroup in 2 years time and see if we can agree that things are better or worse and whether progress has been made. They've got a chance to do things differently. Let's not carp about them failing before they've even started. |
