Time will tell. The word "mandatory" is being used a lot though. "Mandatory" being code for: Poor kids - do as you are told Rich kids - exempt |

The forces can’t accommodate the much diminished personnel they currently have, even in the dilapidated quarters and single accommodation blocks. Where are they going to put all of these youths? Especially when most of the stations have been closed and sold off. And who is going to be in charge of them? Give each soldier a dozen teens to look after on top of their day jobs? Maybe put them in an accommodation barge in Portland..

Very probably. And the mandatory part opens up even more costings, questions, etc |

This one will run and run. It might work or it might fall apart very quickly. It does seem like a very expensive answer to a question nobody is asking though. I look forward to Tory MPs getting hauled over the coals for the next 6 weeks defending a policy they weren't even consulted on.

I seem to remember a case of a footballer being able to postpone (but not avoid entirely) national service some years back. If it's for only those that are unemployed, then I agree though. |

This is the Conservatives we are talking about. Anyone who believes they will be even-handed is a sap. I'm going to watch the polls over the next week! They are 23% at the moment and they must need at least 35% - getting their base back has to be #1 priority. |
