Cleverly says the government consulted with senior military figures about the national service plans before they were announced.
The plan is forecast to cost £2.5bn - £1bn will come from money raised from a "crack down" on tax avoidance, while the rest will be taken from the Shared Prosperity Fund.
Ah, the "old crack down on tax avoidance" ruse...

Jimmy Dimly saying that there will be no criminal sanction for not doing the “mandatory” NS. Which part of mandatory is too confusing for him?
And how will it be paid for? Cleverly said it would be paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance. “External figures assess that we will be able to capture £6bn“
Well why the feck haven’t you been doing this up to now instead of decimating the HMRC.
They have not got a bloody clue.

The whole policy is unworkable. It hasn't been thought through. Rushed out on the back of a fag packet to appeal to the gloriously demented old right-wingers.

I don’t like the idea of this, although when you look at what’s proposed it’s not quite as bad as it’s being made out to be. It does though sound largely unworkable.
I wonder what the snp view is on this. It being a policy in Norway which is one of their key comparator countries.

They’ve had years to do something like this that would have maybe been better thought out (maybe being the operative word cos they’re not renowned for thinking things through) but they have rushed out the announcement with six weeks to go until the election.
Smacks of utter desperation to me.

Perhaps they could introduce mandatory voluntary work for the over 65s? They are a pretty unproductive bunch with their inflation-linked pensions and half million pound houses.
No?
Nah. Probably better to stick with young people who don't have the vote.

Don't all the Scandinavian countries have form of national service?
