The article that the JB quote comes from has more details around how those cuts affected some councils more than others. Birmingham is one that was hit a lot harder for example.

My issue is that it's not Labours fault but it's probably going to be impossible to help councils without some extra funding and income tax and NI rises have been ruled out. Spending cuts haven't been ruled out: bbc.co.uk

The IFS are talking about a choice between cuts or tax rises so it seems like we are at a point where more is needed just to stay the same: bbc.co.uk

...and yes saying there will be tax rises to improve services is probably political suicide so I get it but we then get stuck in a bit of a bind.

I'm still not sure why parties don't just admit it .. after Covid, Brexit, Truss, Inflation, Invasion of Ukraine etc, tax cuts should not in the picture. Whatever party, why not be honest and say 'if this (insert rosy picture of NHS, councils, roads etc) is what you want, anyone above the poverty level is likely to pay more to get it. And some will pay more than others.'

I suspect most of the electorate, other than a very few, but quite loud, focus groups, would rather we pay our way? And undertand what cutting costs means.

That's what you'd hope um but the parties don't seem to think so and if one (of the two main parties) is prepared to offer the world for nothing, I'm not sure the other will take the risk.

I will be interested to see whether the polls shift appreciable in the next few weeks after the national service gambit.
I think it speaks to their decision making process and it wouldn't surprise me at all if there are more fumbled when the manifesto is announced. They are in the bunker now and Sunak has the political nous of a traffic bollard so there may be trouble ahead.

Minister said there were ‘no plans’ for national service policy three days ago

Defence minister Andrew Murrison said national service could ‘damage morale’ if introduced

Saying this is “Back of a fag packet” is grossly unfair on actual back of a fag packet planners. Even they wouldn’t have been this shit.

Sunak says 'national service is back' garners several thousand votes from fucking morons, later the same day says no one is going to jail for refusing loses all those votes plus a load more from people who think he take has lost it.

Also about the military like the idea lie - no they don't, attested by my dad, who was there, a guy called lord marshal Carver gave a speech about how NS had ruined the army.

Oh the polls will shift - not massively, but speaking to my running club colleagues, plenty in favour, although wouldn't vote conservative (just wouldn't vote). Welcome to Cornwall. But plenty will.

I'm still not really getting what "issue" they are seeking to solve here and who is asking for this. Beyond a pure facile grab for Reform votes there seems to be no sense to it.

There are so many things wrong in the country which could be improved by increased funding it seems a ridiculous thing to be spending billions on.

And exactly what are they hoping to fix and how will they measure success? It seems brainless in the extreme. Which isn't to say it won't appeal to some... Probably the same people who are always whingeing about the NHS and potholes.
