Also, announcing it at the D day anniversary, craven.

But as said, it's another divisive idea, children of the better off will weasel out of it, perhaps their DOE will be counted and they can get on with uninterrupted lifes.

If you're working class though, it's another 2 years before your can actually get on with what you want to do.

There's been talk of this being about Reform right wing etc but is there any evidence of that? The think-tank is self described as centre right, Reform haven't mentioned this at all.

ATM to me it just seems truly random. There may be some thought to it as a proposal right now but I'm not seeing it. Is there anyone that is truly going to vote differently because of this?

Kleverly is on LK confounding and confusing the issue. Stating that volunteering is good and it is, but this isn't volunteering, then saying it's about mankind young prime mix with other strata of society well then send them all to university. Also talking about making these conscripts be in the fire brigade just the people you want turning up to save your home.

National Service is maybe just a reset thing? Blurts out some nonsense to consume a news cycle, wipes away the shaky start he's had and then restarts campaigning.

There’s a handful of pensioners who would vote to randomly birch the young if given the chance.

I actually think that some paid volunteering (but full-time) before you start university is a good thing and it would be good if that was an official route for school-leavers as it used to be in Germany (for women and conscientious objectors). Not mandatory though and not as an alternative to NS which I'm totally against.

But 25 days (presumably unpaid) alongside university/college/work is utter bollocks, and as LF says, what are the organisations who have to deal w these young people going to do with them exactly? No use to either party.

And don't give me 'efficiency savings'. Where's my unicorn?

Most of the inefficiencies in my (HE) employer require money to fix them.

Better IT
Better integration of IT
Better calibre of staff (so higher wages)

I suspect many public sector organisations are the same after years of austerity.

If we're going to bring back mandatory unpaid labour, perhaps we could start with the people who missed out first time round in the 1960s and then move down through the age range.
