The more I think about it the more I am convinced that a referendum on the death penalty is in the offing. It just needs one sick nutter committing a horrific crime and it will be seized upon as a pretext. Patel is a fan of CP, and Johnson is cynical enough to seize on any and all wedge issues next time.

I'm in my 50s but I know my weight in kilos (from paragliding - harnesses always rated in kg), height in metres, most speeds in km/h etc.

I tend to do run paces in miles but just habit. I'd be delighted if we just did everything metric. And drive on same side as rest of world too pls! Must make our cars more expensive for manufacturers to build surely?

Sorry if this is sense of humour failure but even for Johnson I wouldn't want death penalty. I agree, crazy nostalgia grabs, sound bites, tax bribes and extremist policies to be wheeled out for 18 months of increasingly desperate bids to cling to power.

Imperial more useable Hahahahahahahhahahaha!

Utter nonsense.

Weight => base unit gram (actually the official base is kilogram, but not in terms of naming) Then you've got a simple scale with prefixes increasing every three orders of magnitude:

femtogram (10^-15), picogram, nanogram, microgram, milligram, gram, kilogram, megagram, gigagram, terragram

With a simple symbol system: pg, ng, ug (actually a greek lower case mu), mg, g, kg, Mg, Gg, Tg.

And then if we take distance => base unit of the metre, we have the same system:

Picometre, nanometre, micrometre, millimetre, metre, kilometre, megametre, gigametre, terrametre.

And the same way of labelling: pm, ng, um, mm, m, km, Mm, Gm, Tm.

Same for time, voumes, current etc etc and derived units.

And it's used in every country in the world. Except by the idiots in one.

So yes, it's obviously far more complicated than a system that measures volumes in gallons and that then depends which country you are in.

But it's one of the the only (if not *the* only) Brexit benefit, so Brexiters gonna do Brexit rubbish.

Happy. I do everything in metric now. The only exception being speed limits when driving. And that's only so I stay within them.

And as you are aware, I'm on record (on this very thread) as being in favour in moving to km/h for speed limits with immediate effect.

The left/right hand side thing is more complicated. There are other countries that drive on the left.

Not many use mph though. Because it's stupid.

In terms of expense for car manufacturing - not sure it's a massive issue for them - would be if it were an unique situation. But it's not.

It does seem to mean certain models/specifications of vehicles never come to the UK though (Chevrolet Bolt being one example - autocar.co.uk )

And anyway, driving on the left is sensible, because most people are right handed, and so need to drive on the left so that they can joust successfully with the lance in their right hand.

Simples.

Please no! I agree it would be divisive, it would be completely wrong to reintroduce legal murder.

Think using a mash up of Imperial and metric is cultural. Go to barber "about an inch off please". No one says "about 20 cm off pls" same with taking about a lot of things. But I have to admit that I'm old and that my cultural language is dying, kids, my daughter etc have different default settings to the previous generation.

And, on a personal level when I'm doing something, DIY or cooking I use metric only, why the hell would I want to make my life more complicated? If I could buy a tale measure with only metric on it I bloody would. Same with scales.

I think it's frankly bizarre to try to push this retrograde step on a population who vastly knows it's shit.
