Maybe metric is more usable but not if you’re cultural references are in another system - as richmac says there’s a mashup as British people know both. I’d also give my height & weight in feet /inches and stone / pounds.

If there was ever a mini fozzy to come along I'm sure the midwife would announce the weight in pounds. And then fozzy you’d probably proudly convert the weight to metric ;-)

I would never tell people I’m 186cm, I’m 6ft 1! Perhaps my friend who is 5ft 11 might prefer to be 180cm though

And fozzy perhaps it’s just more usable to me - which is all I’m really concerned about. And if metric is more usable for you then that’s good too.

Perhaps the imperial concept of “a bit, some bits, a lot” appeals to the layman, but the scientist in you prefers the precise nature of metric?

By the way your sarcastic laughter at any post you disagree with doesn’t do you any favours. Source (your precious posts).

Pretty sure the NHS use metric for everything. And have done so for ages.

Why does everyone say the weight in lbs then?

The govt has a secret consultation that they haven’t publicised that uses a form you have to download in odt format and fill in and email back to some address.

How they think their technophobic pensioner base will cope with that is mystery…

Best to leave things as they are. We use a mix of imperial and metric with metric official and imperial from historical parlance so why change something that’s working fine.

I can’t imagine the roads bill to fix all the slip roads if we moved to LH drive.

Always found it odd that the international scientific name for space air and sea distance is a nautical mile.

Because that's the cultural norm, at a guess. Doesn't mean babies aren't weighed at birth in kilos though.

Probably the only thing that imperial measures describe better are air temps as there's a much wider range of values across "normal" daily temperatures, and many folk don't find decimals that intuitive. By every other measure metric makes far more sense - source being my former US based scientific colleagues

Ah, thank you. I don’t work with measurements on a daily basis (and only domestically when I do) so it’s fascinating to get a well explained and non partisan insight from someone more expert than myself.
