I bet that no-one at all wrote to the anachronism JRM and said "I've got a good idea for a Brexit benefit. Let's bring back a really complex measuring system that no-one else in the known universe actually uses, no-one under the age of 40 has any inkling of, and those over 40 have forgotten about. That would be great. Thanks".

I genuinely think most of the people who consider imperial measures to be a good idea have forgotten how much of a pain in the ass it'll be or are to thick to learn how to use it. I read on the internet either BBC or Guardian the boss of Asda labelled it ridiculous. |

I believe (I didn't read it so I don't know) that 'consulting on the use of Imperial measures' was a Tory manifesto commitment. As they are now consulting they can say that they are keeping their manifesto pledges. The consultation will surely come to the conclusion that the status quo should remain, but that's irrelevant. They've done what they said they would. (And wasted everyone's time .)

I must be a couple of years behind you, macca 53, since my exercise books had imperial to metric conversions on the back cover! I never really got a "feel" for either system until adulthood anyway. But at least the metric one was logical and consistent! Although I know an apple weighs about 4 ounces, or 112 grammes! |

I still weigh out my pasta in ounces (thanks mum), but my rice in grams. 40 years old, and definitely use a mish mash of metric and imperial measures. This whole thing just feels like a call to arms to the blue rinse brigade to save St Boris. |

It’s a funny one. I’m comfortable with both but tend to use imperial more. Age perhaps? To an extent the unit sizes of inches / feet / yards, ounces / lbs / stones feel oddly more usable than cm / metre and gram / kg. Perhaps it is because the imperial units are nearer in size to each other than the multiples of 100 / 1000 in metric. However the crux is that zero government resources should be devoted to this policy. It’s not in the least important and smacks of Nicola Murray in the thick of it going on about wooden toys. |
