Thanks Dvorak :)
this discussion has also reminded me I need to start nagging Daughter to sort paying into a pension out - in the way dad nagged me.

Correction: gap between Basic State Pension (old pension) and New Pension is £42 per week, rather more than I stated.

Here's a table of State Pension amounts over the years. Interesting. adviser.royallondon.com Took until July 1974 to reach a tenner a week - and that was a £2.25 increase from the amount set just nine months previously.

It’s been great seeing the flags in my village, both Devon and the Cross of St George. I feel that the historic association of England flags = racist is consigned to history. Not of course for the left - see Thornberry sneering in Medway - way out of kilter with so many ordinary people across England. It’s a flag. That’s all.

I’m very proud to be English. I’d be just as proud I’m sure if I was from another nation. Are we the best nation in the world? I don’t honestly think anyone can say that with a straight face, not even me, and certainly not at football as history shows. But there are many things to be proud of in the past, present and future. Seeing people of all backgrounds embracing the flag is a heartening show of unity. Pride in their country, without jingoism, without nationalism, pride in who and what you are.

You compete under a national flag but that’s just a convenient construct really to enable the tournament to take place - I honestly think that some posters here would rather we all spoke Esperanto and that there was no need for any international sporting contests as there were no borders.

With all that said, if you think for the players that it’s all about the flag then you don’t understand the dynamic of team sports. The England team will want to win for their mates - i.e. each other - and for the people who’ve sacrificed to get them where they’ve got to. For their country too, but ultimately for their mates. That will cut far deeper than nationality.

If only we afforded other countries displaying their flags with the same dignity eh?

Yes I did see that, a few isolated football hooligans I think but doubtless very concerning for the people involved.

One positive about this tournament I’ve noticed is that the fans at Wembley don’t appear to be put in separate cages like they have been previously.

Away from the voter apathy promoting distraction, it's good to see domine picking up, at least in part, the slack left by the government...

Henning Wehn on the flag of St George ...
... Well, symbols, such as flags.
Seeing we're in England, it's the flag of St George.
Because nothing says "welcome to England" more than a St George's flag in someone's front garden.
Now, I absolutely love the flag of St George because it's a first-class burglar deterrent.
"I'm not going anywhere near that one, it's some nutter's house."
I mean, obviously equating the flag of St George with mental health problems and violence is quite a middle-class notion, innit?
All the scallywags going around burgling houses, they know better. They know the flag of St George outside the house guarantees a 70" plasma TV screen inside the house, and make it a prime target.
So you're off much better flying the flag of English Heritage. No-one will come near it because they know it's at least £20 to get in and absolutely nothing worth nicking.

On another subject, the GOP in America seems to be completely deranged now, with members regularly whipping up supporters into a froth of hate and paranoia. How long before we see:
a) Fistfights in Congress
b) Political assassinations

America seems to have lost its mind.

Should be the flag of St Edmund [runs for cover]. Also seen other nations flags, although they've disappeared as the teams go out.

Medway was 2014 and I think Thornberry resigned.
