J2R there were also hangovers from WW2 in Yugoslavia, the Croat Nationalists had sided with the Nazis, plenty of Bosnian muslims too, whilst the Serbs were persecuted.

Post war the Serb nationalists were bitter about Communist rule. Tito being a Croat didn't help.

Additionally there were large Serbian populations in the neighbouring countries, who opposed their independence from Yugoslavia.

It is annoying though not knowing whether it will be "E", "B" or "U" on a website dropdown!!

As a result of Brexit, we'll be able to have whole new country lists on websites, with 'England' at the top, probably followed by a few blanks, then others like 'The British Protectorate of Kenya'.

Bratislava was, for a long while, the capital of Austro-Hungary. One of the most important cities in Europe. Not for a few years, but centuries.

Only after the breakup of the Soviet sphere of influence did Bratislava become a subservient capital to Prague.

Again, a nation harking back to its historic glory times not wishing to have to be told what to do by politicians in another nation's capital.

J2R - that was my point about the divorce not the revolution...

Velvet revolution 1989
War in yugoslavia 1991-2001

Velvet divorce 1993.

It was evident in 1993, that to avoid what had been happening thus far (and far worse was to come) that such an outcome should be avoided. It was mainly a one sided break and Slovak nationalism was the main reason.

I'm proud to be Scottish, British, and a quarter Cornish. And my nephews are pure Yorkshire so it's my favourite English County, although I lived in London (Motspur Park) for 4 years, postal address was Surrey 😉

Sorry, Chris, didn't read carefully enough.

Certainly part of my antagonistic attitude towards nationalism stems from seeing what it did in Yugoslavia, but I accept there are other variants of nationalism which aren't always so poisonous.

Name-calling will be called out, and Ad hominem will be frowned upon. :-) And whatabout-ery sits somewhere above responding to tone and below contradiction.
