Every time I watch a vox pop on tv from the North of England on tv I’m incredulous.

I saw an interesting article about a data mining company which had analysed tweets to evaluate voting intentions and had projected seat shares. He came up with 289 seats for the Tories and a hung Parliament. Not that astonishing a misread when you consider the old data analytics adage "Bullshit in, bullshit out". |

Here's why I don't think Labour will be out in the wilderness as long as some are bemoaning. (Yes they have some work to do and the next election isn't a given) Brexit is now 100% going to happen. Now it could be all sunshine and flowers and sunny uplands and £350m/week for the NHS etc etc. If it is, great, I'll have been wrong. I kind of doubt this, given everything we know about the world and the considered opinions and analyses of experts in the various fields, but if they (and I therefore) are wrong, then fine, we'll be in a better place. In this scenario worse thing is that I'm wrong. But...what is more likely is that in ~3-4 years time, we'll still be banging on about relationships with the EU and stuff. At which point, Johnson's "Get Brexit Done" slogan comes back to haunt him as because it has resonated so much it's undeniable. From my (limited) reading of the situation many voters seem to believe that come Jan 31st, that's it.... On top of this, all learned economic analysis suggests that, at best, growth will be slow (now I could be wrong and all this investment will be 'unleashed' and then we're back to ok, I was wrong and everything will be great) - this means - fewer jobs, slow wage growth, no £350m for the NHS, no new hospitals, nurses etc etc etc. (i.e. continued austerity, which I expect to continue no matter what the Tory manifesto says) The attack lines are then there (as to be fair they were this time with a more savvy leader) to hit with. Then on top of this, the debt bubble is growing again (nothing in the financial world has changed). SHould there be another major crisis like 2008 or even half as bad (given there's little elasticity in the system unlike in 2008), then all this adds up to we've left the EU and everything is as shit as it was before and our "Australian style points system" has seen little change in immigration because Patel has been reshuffled out the cabinet. Don't get me wrong, it's going to be really really shit for the next few years, especially the leaving the EU part, but the Tories now 100% totally own the shitstorm that is about to come. |

And I agree with Sushi - Stander or whatever Sockpuppet name he's currently using (I worked it out several weeks ago it was him) - is now just trolling and crowing. But WWYLGOI I guess. Nothing changes. |

The fundamental of Brexit are simple enough - if trade is poorer with the EU it needs to step up by an equal amount with another big player like the US or China - just for us to stand still. The hard right would happily have the regulations bonfire to get this going and it might be where necessity puts us. Good luck Scunthorpe if it pans out that way. I hear Nigel Dodds lost his seat, can't say I'm sorry to see the DUP on the back foot. So DV is Stander after all, apologies Dio, you saw through it and I didn't. |

Don't worry, the right wing press will find another scapegoat long before that, it will never be the Tories' fault and it's just project fear blah blah blah all the way to the food bank.

JDA - normally I'd agree, but the problem with simple slogans and simplism is that they resonate and stick. People will remember "Get Brexit Done" and "350m/week for the NHS" And if nothing changes/improves.... |
