Hmm...in terms of Labour women, the overall party membership want someone with the intelligence and articulacy of a Thornberry, combined with the politics of a Long-Bailey or a Rayner. I can't think of a woman on the front-bench who has both, alas (or a man either, although Starmer is closest).

(As an aside, Jess Phillps arguably has both, but a really un-winning 'it's all about me' manner about her, alas)

I'm failing to shed tears about Flint and Pidcock getting booted, I must say.

allyC - as you hinted, labour are dead in scotland unless they come out for indy now. even if they won everything here like they used, the tories would still have trounced them. labour have a deep existential crisis to resolve now, and i don't see a leader amongst what's left (starmer at a push)

I really like Jess Phillips, she seems like she cares about her constituents.

I didn't mind Pidcock much. V little time for Flint.

Scrooge - from a selfish, English POV, Scottish Labour aren't much use to lefties down her either way, in that case. Look at the Blair cabinet (and the Smith/Kinnock frontbench) it's a massive loss to British politics too (although I suspect a lot of those who would have joined SLab a generation ago are SNP now)...

Starmer would be a much better bet as leader if he had a northern constituency. Of course, he might well be an ex-MP this morning in that case...

Why has Yvette Cooper’s name fallen from grace? Many Tories were petrified of her.

JB - as Labour has a habit of picking the non obvious option for leader, excepting Blair (and Smith)... Brown doesn't count as unopposed... I'm not taking you up on that.

I thought of Cooper again, but a) she was rubbish in the last leadership contest (which is why we're here now) and b) seems to have both mortally offended Corbynites and Tories recently and was getting acres of grief from both on social media (a bit like Jess Phillips). It's ok to annoy one, but both I'd suggest not clever.
